5.0 out of 5 stars Apparently Overlooked, July 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tin Can Alley (Audio CD)
Hardly any reviews of this album; must not be getting the attention it deserves. Where else are you going to find a perfect fusion of Count Basie and Eric Dolphy? I love the piano-less format. The colors are dark and earthy and the soloists have all the room they need to stretch out. It reminds me of some of the stuff Elvin Jones put out in the '70's, like the fabulous "Genesis" album, now out of print. DeJohnette's could have been arrested, his feel is so relentlessly good. This is the album in which old-timey jazz and blues are taken for a crazy ride to another level. The Coltrane tunes are impeccably done, and "I Know", well, what can you say about using an old strip-tease tune as a vehicle for some outside soloing?

How did an album like this ever get released on the normally torpid ECM label? No "sounds of the fjords" ambience here. It's gritty and fun, two adjectives I'd never generally use for ECM product.

5.0 out of 5 stars dejohnette is one of a kind, March 18, 2007
This review is from: Tin Can Alley (Audio CD)
i have this release on vinyl, and it is really astounding (hope to hear it on cd one day, when i can afford an import copy!). jack dejohnette is an incredibly talented and unique musician - not only the best jazz drummer on the planet, but also a fine composer and multi-instrumentalist. the first two tunes on this outing just floor me. 'tin pan alley' is a great ornette-like tune with plenty of space for the drums to both lay down a fluid and intoxicating groove as well as fill in harmonically and even hint at melody - masterful. and 'pastel rhapsody' shows another side - fragile, beautiful, soulful, and equally as creative. the rest of the disc is fine as well. it's hard to go wrong with any of dejohnette's releases (special edition and others), but this one is uniquely special.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Pastel Rhapsody" from Tin Can Alley will thrill you!, July 5, 2000

"Pastel Rhapsody'is a beautiful composition executed sublimely. The piece is full of romance and hope. DeJohnette performs seamlessly on piano and drums. He also plays organ, congas, timpani, and sings on other tunes. He is supported by a strong group, including Chico Freeman, John Purcell, and Peter Warren. DeJohnette wrote 4 of the 5 compositions.
