Most inspiring album ever,
By Manuel (Roubaix, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tin Cans With Strings to You (Audio CD)
This album is too wonderful to be perfectly described. It is the essence of emocore: a truthful, touching music, and almost every album by Far is as emotionnally fantastic. My favorite song ever would probably be Job's Eyes. Gets you through all feelings, from anger to happiness, melancholy to self-confidence. Too bad they didn' t have a chance to be known worldwide, but that' s the fate of real music. A must-hear.

I've owned this CD for around 2 years now, and in all honesty I can truly say that this album is possibly the GREATEST album of the 90s. For all those who thought that "Issues" by Korn was full of emotion and frustration, then tracks like "What I've Wanted To Say" and "Job's Eyes" will make you think on a whole different wavelength. An album for all occasions- parties, romantic backing music.... You can't go wrong. Jonah's voice is beautiful also.

The best band you never heard,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tin Cans With Strings to You (Audio CD)
Tin Cans with strings to you, is an album by the Sacramento based Far. This album is just oozing emotion and feelings. It is very smooth and fluctuates from quick songs like Love American Style, which questions what we see on T.V. and how much of it we believe, to the slow, beautifully painful Job's eye(the albums highlight) that almost brings me to tears to this day. It has an edge for real rockers, but is so down low and grooving that any true music fan could appreciate. Unfortunately very few people know of this band which I consider to be like one of the greatest bands currently out there. Overall this cd is fabulous and should be listened to by all.

I LOVE THIS CD!!!,
This review is from: Tin Cans With Strings to You (Audio CD)
Maybe the title's a bit overblown, but the statement is undoubtably true. While Water and Solutions features great production and songwriting, I prefer the emotional power and hypnotic riffs of this album by a long shot. Every song is nothing short of amazing, having comforted me in many depressed and terrified moments that result from an anxiety disorder I have. While the music isn't very complex (except for the guitar/feedback interplay in "Sorrow's End"), Jonah's voice makes all the difference. Like Jeff Magnum from Neutral Milk Hotel (except bettter), his honesty in the lyrics and passion in singing make the entire album worthwhile to listen to again and again. Many times, his tortured descriptions of modern day life (combined with the occasional song from the point of view of a teenage girl ) have brought solace to me in times of darkness. They will do the same for just about any depressed soul out there. If you've taken the time to read this, PLEASE do yourself a favour and purchase this recording. I promise you won't regret it. And by the way, the liner notes have some of the coolest artwork I've ever seen in a CD.

THE BEST OF SACRAMENTO,

THIS ALBUM, ALONG WITH THEIR OTHER ALBUMS (WATER AND SOLUTIONS, AND QUICK) BLOW ME AWAY. JONAH'S AMAZING VOCALS GO FROM NEAR A WHISPER TO INTENSE ENERGETIC YELLING ON SONGS SUCH AS LOVE AMERICAN STYLE. I ALSO LOVE THE SMOOTH TRANSITION OF LOWER, NATURAL VOICE TO FALSETTO IN SORROWS END. I HOPE TO SEE A REUNION OF THESE GUYS SOON. I WANT MORE...

One of the most under-rated bands ever,

Far is one of the best bands, if not the best band, of the nineties. And the sad part is, no one knows about them. "Tin Cans with Strings to You" is the most powerful and pure genius album I have ever heard, rivaled only by Far's 1998 release, "Water and Solutions". Far comes from the Sacramento scene which also spawned the Deftones and Will Haven, also great bands. Although the influence of these bands is evident, Far has a sound that is all their own. Far manages to get a sound that brings the best parts of hardcore, emo, and alternative music together. Agression, anger, and feelings from the heart. Vocalist Jonah Mantranga's lyrical content is pure genius as he touches on everything from genocide to love in a purely abstract way. Go buy this album now, and listen to every single song, you will be blown away.

Powerful lyrics backed up in song...,

If it doesn't come across as too pretentious, I'd like to begin this review by saying that Far are Far. I think comparing them to bands such as Tool or the Deftones isn't really a fair comparison. They don't have the intracies in their songs as Tool do, and on the whole they're not as heavy as the Deftones. That doesn't mean, however, they aren't good. This album, although the production isn't as good as "Water and Solutions", and although it feels a lot heavier than "Water and Solutions", has two songs which really, really do blow you away. They are "Job's Eyes" and "Sorrow's End...." - Both fairly long songs for Far (both check in at over 5 minutes long, with "Job's Eyes" almost reaching 7:30) but both, especially "Job's Eyes", are so powerful and so symbollic of everything that has been missing from music in the past two decades. You really need to hear them. You really do need to hear the whole album, and listen to it for what it is. It's impossible to describe it in words, and I'm not going to do Far the injustice of me trying.

Good, but a little rough around the edges,
By A. Estes (Maine) - See all my reviews

Listening to both of Far's releases on Epic (Tins Cans With Strings To You & Water and Solutions), you can hear quite a difference in the two. TCWSTY is a little heavier than Water & Solutions and the production is rather poor when comparing. Jonah's voice seems to be drowned in the music at times, which is unfortunate cuz he has such a great voice. But this album is still great nevertheless. The album's opener "What I've Always Wanted To Say" and "In The Aisle Yelling" have a good balance of energy and melody. The last track, "Sorrow's End" is a lot more mellow than the rest of the album, with more emphasis on Jonah's vocals, making it a standout track. But the real star on this CD is the 7 and a half minute long "Job's Eyes" which I believe truly defines Far's sound. All in all, it's a good CD, but like I said, the production needed some work. But that doesn't keep it from still being one of the best in my collection and definetly doesn't keep Far from being one of my favorite bands of all-time. Maybe someday there will be a reunion. Let's hope.

Brilliant, Energetic, Emotional, what more do you want?,

GREAT record. One of my favorites EVER. Every song is outstanding, from the dissonant sadness of Job's Eyes and Girl, to the energetic explosions of Cut-Out and Joining the Circus. Not a dull moment. Memorable, yet simple, guitar riffs backed by a driving bassline.. Chris Robyn's excellent drumming.. and of course Jonah's purely amazing voice. If you haven't heard this, you need to. - j o e

More Amazingly Emo-Charged Real Music From a Real Band,
By Amir Tajakin (Orange, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tin Cans With Strings to You (Audio CD)
Far is and has and always will be one of my favorite bands. Jonah Mataranga is possibly the greatest unheard musician of our time. This is my favorite Far album. Every song is great, especially What I've Wanted to Say and In the Aisle, Yelling. Far, along with the Deftones, are the two greatest emocore groups ever. Strong guitars, whisper to sing to scream vocals, powerful drums, and meaningful lyrics make up Tin Cans With Strings to You. One of my favorite CDs ever.
