Book Description

March 1, 2000
A sensible and informative guide to collectible sheet music, this CD-ROM contains an exportable database of over 10,000 titles of American sheet music, published up to 1925. The database is indexed by Title, Composers, Performers, Publishers and Date. An entertaining, easy to read history of the publishing houses that evolved into "Tin Pan Alley", the heart of American popular music constitutes a second section. This history also deals with the importance of Black American composers and performers whose works inspired and dominated the field of Ragtime: Scott Joplin, Lamb, Hunter... The music hall performers who composed much of their own songs are also present, Sophie Tucker, even Enrico Caruso. The phenomenon of collectibles, with guidelines on categories, is analyzed in-depth. All this with continuous sounds giving life to the sheet music covers themselves. Over 500 covers in color and more than a hundred songs performed in the style of the period: "Smiles", "Over There" "Let Me Call You Sweetheart"... this CD-ROM is exceptional indeed.

By 1910, Woolworth had more or less set the price of sheet music at the proverbial "dime", while cheap copies could also be bought at department stores like Macy's. Yet, the role of songwriters was more recognized than during the preceding century - quite a difference from the $10 paid to Stephen Foster for "Oh! Susanna" to the $20,000 paid to Gus Edwards for his "By The Light Of The Silvery Moon". The world of popular sheet music saw its economic structure transformed. The proverbial "cake" was a million copy industry by the end of the century...

In 1825, there were a mere sixty major music publishing establishments in the entire country; yet by 1890, some seven hundred music publishing houses grossed over $20 million per year from the sales of their works...

The influence of Black songs on American popular music is undeniable. From Francis Johnson, the most popular band-leader of the time, who formed the Coloured Black Band in 1821, touring Europe and playing for Queen Victoria, to James A. Bland's "In The Evening By The Moonlight", they have contributed much to American popular songs of the 19th century. By the end of the century, Black songwriters were producing hit songs, evolving from Minstrel Shows. As such, it is logical that these hits developed in the theatrical scene. Black songwriters such as the Johnson brothers, John Rosamond and James Weldon, Bob Cole and Bert Williams, had their biggest hits first sung on the Broadway stage.

Black sheet music publishing companies soon made their appearance on Tin Pan Alley...
