4.0 out of 5 stars A serious attempt to update an old classic
This family move has many delightful and thoughtful moments and will leave an impact on your kids but feels sometimes slow in the storytelling and pacing. Jon Voight does a good job directing and I am curious if there will be more to come. If you are looking for a family movie without tons of special effects and more dialog based addressing serious problems ( violence,...

1.0 out of 5 stars What's going on here?
I own more than 2500 DVDs that are about children, for children or movies that are appropriate for children and teens. This is the strangest one of all. The cover says it is a 90-minute movie about a boy being bullied by some kids in his Los Angeles neighborhood. It says the actors are: Trenton Knight, Jon Voight, Ally Sheedy, Dom DeLuise, Bethany Richards, Directors:...

Jon Voight does a good job directing and I am curious if there will be more to come. If you are looking for a family movie without tons of special effects and more dialog based addressing serious problems ( violence, gangs, mother-son relationship) this would be the right film for you.

This was one of my favorite movies as a child! Now, at 29, I can't wait to show it to my children! And actually, I'm pretty excited to watch it myself!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Family Movie, June 11, 2005
This review is from: Tin Soldier [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I watched this because Jon Voight was in it; I had no idea what it would be about. And Voight is, as usual, fun to watch in this story about a boy who has no father, and has to deal with gangs, a crush on a pretty classmate, and a tendency to feel sorry for himself, and who gets some help in those areas from a lively knight (Voight) that nobody but the boy can see.

It was sweet without being syrupy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Little Girls' Dance Dream, May 6, 2001

If your daughter loves dance and fairy tale romance, this is the tape for her. The colors of sets and costumes are bright, colorful and engaging. There is no dialogue, however Sally Struthers narrates the story while non-stop ballet sequences portray the action. Light drama while the toy soldier finds his way back to the toy room from the sewer. My eight and ten year old daughters both enjoy this film, and have insisted on renting it more than once.

I own more than 2500 DVDs that are about children, for children or movies that are appropriate for children and teens. This is the strangest one of all. The cover says it is a 90-minute movie about a boy being bullied by some kids in his Los Angeles neighborhood. It says the actors are: Trenton Knight, Jon Voight, Ally Sheedy, Dom DeLuise, Bethany Richards, Directors: Jon Voight, Gregory Gieras.

Instead, what you get is a 47 minute diologue-less ballet that is narrated by Sally Struthers. The DVD itself shows the same boy as is shown on the cover of the DVD case, but the story is nothing like a modern story about a modern boy. At first, I thought they were telling the Hans Christian Andersen story as an introduction to the movie, but there is no choice between the Cover story and the DVD story, and the DVD just ends at the end of the ballet. It is a movie that younger children would like, BUT IT BEARS NO RESEMBLANCE TO WHAT THE COVER SAYS IT'S ABOUT. I am going to contact the DVD producers to see if I can find out what is going on. If I get a reply, I'll update this review.
