a great sail, a great story, well told!,

robert manry's `tinkerbelle' story is so great, and so well written, that i can't believe no one else has reviewed it, and that it appears to be so terribly forgotten. manry was a flatlander, a mid-life copy editor with Cleveland's daily Plain Dealer in the early 1960's, with a wife and children, when he bought a 13 foot sailing dinghy for family fun. one winter he put a tiny home-made cabin on it, and then, when his plans to take a long vacation and join on a friend's bigger boat for the `sail of a lifetime' across the atlantic fell through, he decided to secretly try the same voyage solo in his dinghy instead. manry is such an everyman, and so matter-of-fact, and yet his journey is ultimately simply a stunning feat of sailing, and rendered so skillfully and enjoyably in this fine little account. ridiculously, the book appears to be nearly lost to the sands of time, yet for pure sailing adventure and reading enjoyment tinkerbelle deserves to be right alongside the great sailing classics like robin lee graham's `dove' and tania aibe's `maiden voyage'. enjoy!

Tinkerbelle now soon to be an e-book,
By ClevelandMemory (Cleveland, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tinkerbelle
Tinkerbelle is such a great story of a solo voyage across the Atlantic, 40 years ago this summer, that the Cleveland Memory Project is making an e-book edition of it, which will be available, along with a lot of other Tinkerbelle history materials, around August 1st. Look for it on-line (I'm not allowed to furnish the address) and also buy a regular print copy for a comfortable read, if you can find one. It's well worth your time.

My dad gave me a copy of this book to read when I was in my early teens. I had a devil of the time trying to find a copy of it now, however. This really surprises me because it's truly a classic of small boat voyaging. It's a very well written account of a tremendous piece of sailing by a humble, straight-forward man and a fabulous yarn, as well. It's an especially good book to pick up next time you find yourself grumbling about how confined your twenty-five footer is and that you "need" a bigger boat...
