If you have two to three years of high school Spanish and a good Spanish-English dictionary or a friend that is a native speaker, you can work your way through this work. It is clearly the predecessor to Tintin in America. The style is far less sophisticated than in later works. You might say that this work is the grandfather of all the later works. When Herge wrote this book some of the characterizations would have been perfectly appropriate but now they may either be quaint or offensive depending upon your political views. I'm glad that I bought the book and put in the effort to read it.

This book is a great read for lovers of Tintin. I bought mine used here, but a friend just ordered it from a shop in SF called "karikter", I think. Worth the effort to track down...

I truly loved this book because it is not in color like the rest of the books. This gives it a air of rarity and exclusivity. I have misplaced mine. I think my mother threw it away during her fleaning frenzies. I have tried desperately to locate another english version. All of herge's books about TINTIN are so realistic that it actually mirrors historical facts. It is not just a comic but a loose " reference" to the occurences of his day. This is evident in the scenario in the Blue Lotus where the Japanese invaded China due to some gorilla insurrection. Historians have said that the Japanese stated some of these acts in order to have an excuse to invade manchuria.
