Editorial Reviews

Three of the most delighful, erotic comedies of recent years. FRIVOLOUS LOLA (Monella), a charming story of amorous adventures in an idyllic country village in the late 1950s. CHEEKY! (Transgredire) follows a young Italian woman's journey to London for a course in English, which quickly turns into a full-immersion course in sex. And last, to round out the package, six couples share their excitement with us in PRIVATE (Fallo!). Tinto Brass (Caligula), continues his longstanding series of erotic cinema, demonstrating that extra-marital affairs and jealosy are not necessarily cause for conflict and divorce, but are rather, ingredients to heighten our love lies.

Ok, its not a set which you can say is great on plot or story or have any deeper significance than appreciation. This set, released by Cult Epics, is a 3-disc set featuring some of Tinto Brass' more explicit works.

To start, PRIVATE (Director's Cut) is, perhaps, his most explicit film to date. It basically shows a few vingettes of well endowed women with nice round behinds. Most of stories deal with vacationers who discover some person working and gets invited to their private lifetyle and fantasies. While there are many phallus's wavering about, about half of them are prosthetic and the other half are real. Further, the original Italian name of the film "Phallo!" does not translate to the obvious, "Phallus", but rather "It Making It" (literally), but probably more in the line of "Making It!". Not an exciting title, nor does "Private" really say much about the film either. But regardless of title, the film is most exciting that it step a little further out of the boundaries of regular sexploitation by making a high quality professional sex pic. Beautiful women, lovely cinematography, and professional acting. The situations are cute and add to the overall presentation.

FRIVOLOUS LOLA was probably my least favorite of the three. About a young attractive female who is hot for her boyfriend to give it up, but he wants to wait for marriage. Meanwhile, she trots around town showing everyone what she has to offer by flashing and leading guys on. The main attraction, Lola (Anna Ammirati) is not as cute as many of the other ladies Brass has used, so this was somewhat of a deterrent. Am I being superficial? Of course, the film is designed that way. Her mischievous and flirty ways seemed off-putting rather than cutesy. While she is hot to trot all around town, her way about it suggested her frviolity - thus the name of the film.

Last is CHEEKY. I would believe the title refers the behind, as Brass seems to adore that part of the anatomy more than any other part. The film is about 2 young lovers, the boy of which discovers some letters by his girlfriend who evidently had a summer fling. He leaves her and she decides to become a lesbian. He on the other hand is torn by the whole thing and cant think straight. She is upset by the matter and looks for recourses through other people. The star Carla (Yuliya Mayarchuk) is a very hot looking woman. Just beautiful all the way around. One of the more explicit films in the Brass cannon of films and certainly worthwhile to check out.

In the end, this Brass trilogy is highly reccomended for lovers of Italian sexploitation films with high quality productions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what you think, October 2, 2008
This review is from: The Tinto Brass Collection, Volume II Uncut & Uncensored (DVD)
Welcome to the world of Tinto Brass, where all the women are naked and beautiful, all the men are eager, and all the bottoms are above average. He has a very special vision, a unique way of looking at the world, and his films burst with life-affirmation, joy, pleasure, and...did I mention the beautiful naked women?

Probably best known in the West for his notorious film Caligula, a film which he disowned after Bob Guccione stuck a bunch of hard core scenes into it, Tinto Brass is an Italian filmmaker who specializes in light romantic sex comedies. His films have a sense of brightness and ease that make sex seem like innocent fun instead of something dirty.

For those unfamiliar with his work, this box set makes a good introduction. Two of the films, Cheeky! And Frivolous Lola, are fairly similar in that they have simple plots and stories to get the characters in motion, while Private is an anthology series of five shorts. The three DVDs are the uncut and uncensored versions of the films.

Of the three, "Private" is the most hard core, and "Frivolous Lola" is the least. None of the gals hold anything back in the three films however, and the only ones disappointed will be the people who don't like watching carefree, beautiful naked girls doing their thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foreign comedy, September 18, 2011
This review is from: The Tinto Brass Collection, Volume II Uncut & Uncensored (DVD)
Offbeat foreign comedy that one needs to have an open mind to enjoy and not expect Oscar-winning performances. Definately a movie that will someday have a cult following here in the U.S.
