Editorial Reviews

Product Description
"Tintype is a triumph." -- Nerve Magazine

"Incredible debut." -- The Georgia Straight

"One of the best local releases of the year by far." -- The Province

"Their technique is well practiced, but edged like the razorblade your girlfriend used on her legs last night." -- Earshot

Holding the torch high in today's garage rock revival, Vancouver duo The Pack A.D. strikes with a raw, hell-torn, blues-rock swagger that is equally contemplative and unflinching.

The Pack A.D. is a duo, but do not expect a stripped-down outfit.

The Pack A.D. is two women, but do not expect "girly" music.

The Pack A.D. blends traditional blues and rock with a focus on rhythm guitar, solid drum lines, and singing straight from the gut. With a full sound, The Pack A.D. is both haunting and irresistibly foot stomping. Becky Black's voice has the feel of a hot, whiskey-soaked night. Maya Miller's drums fill out a restrained yet loose sound, just waiting on a snowfall ... and that's just the way they like it.

Tintype, their debut album, is 17 tracks of Black and Miller rockin' out and handing out their blues the way they know best--loud, edgy, and unforgiving.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw, Bluesy, Garage Rock, May 16, 2008
The Pack AD are Becky Black(guitar, vocal, piano) and Maya Miller(percussion)so comparisons to Black keys/White Stripes are going to be made. As with those other two piece bands they manage to produce a full and rich sound that doesn't feel the need for the support of other instruments.
I read a review of this album that suggested that the presence of some solo piano pieces marked this band out as 'more than just another retro-blues outfit' but those turned out to be little more than mood changing interludes between tracks. So, having discounted that element, what you are left with is a really very good blues-rock album with a loose n' raw 'garage' feel.
I wouldn't consider myself a 'fan' of this sort of thing but the sheer gusto with which the music is approached, as well as the high quality self-penned songs, definitely lifts this well above the average. I've been playing this a lot in the car and it's a great way to take your mind off the frustrations of rush hour traffic.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for this, May 7, 2009
I'll admit, I don't listen to a lot new music. But after learning about this band and then hearing a few tracks, I was hooked. They play raw blues like it was meant to be played. With only 2 instruments, you need to have the talent and attitude to make it work - and this album shows how the The Pack make it work by creating a sound that hits you in the gut, then pushes you around for good measure.

If you're looking for some music to rock your soul, this album will do it.
