Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1–Emma has been dancing with her grandpa since she was a baby. They make clickety-clack, tip-tapping noises with their feet wherever they go and use hats and canes in their impromptu performances. The role of teacher switches to Emma, though, after her sixth birthday, as it has become difficult for Pop to remember things, and she is determined to find a way to keep their dance routines going. She learns the truth about his memory loss through a conversation with her grandma. "‘His feet remember,' Emma explained softly. ‘They remember today.' Gram smiled, reaching one hand to Pop and the other to Emma. ‘And maybe we can help them remember tomorrow.'" Short text and attention-grabbing words combine with colorful gouache and pencil illustrations. The passage of time is reflected through birthday cakes and changing appearances. Emma's pink dresses stand out against the greens and blues on the pages, as does a lovable pup that is never far from her side or Pop's. With Docampo's inclusion of a gramophone, bowties, and suspenders, Tip-Tap Pop has a nostalgic feel and leisurely pace. A first purchase.Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

Lovely story and lovely illustrations.

I really appreciate this story and the lesson it can teach young children who may be dealing with or will have to deal with an aging grandparent losing their memory.

I love this book! This is the touching story of a relationship between a young girl and her grandfather, and how their love of dance forms a bond between them that is enduring.

The story is perfectly pitched for children, including those learning to read. The rhythm and cadence of the dance steps wind their way into the narrative, giving the story a pace and liveliness. The story itself is warm, with a tenderness that stays authentic and accessible for kids, without crossing the line into becoming sugary. I think most children could easily relate to Emma and her love for her grandfather, and the author does a wonderful job of showing a child's perspective on their relationship. Emma shows us first how her grandfather kindles the love of dance in her, their special connection as a result, her uncertainty about how to handle the changes in his memory, her happiness in finding a way to still connect with him, and then her simple acceptance of giving the same gift of dance back to her grandfather in her own turn. Adults will also feel and appreciate all the emotional undercurrents that don't have to be spelled out in the story. The vibrant illustrations bring the perfect touches of charm and humor.

This book is perfect for any child who has a special relationship with an older family member, including those trying to understand changes such as Alzheimer's. But, no special situation is required to enjoy this book, it is an enjoyable read for any and all. My daughter and I love this book, and I highly recommend it!

I took a look inside the book before I bought it but the preview stops right before the story takes a turn. My daughter takes tap dance and I thought this would be a great story for her but just as the girl in the story gets excited about dancing and finding music everywhere, the story twists and becomes about her grandfather who we can assume has Alzheimer's. I wasn't ready to discuss that issue with my daughter and was disappointed the book wasn't more about the dance. I wish the preview would have been one or two pages longer - I wouldn't have bought the book.

Tip-Tap Pop is a heart-warming story of a young girl and her sweet relationship with her grandfather. From a young age he taught her to dance and to listen to the music all around her. One summer he slowly forgets everything and sits in his chair all day. Emma is sad and so are her feet. She doesn't feel like dancing anymore. With patience Emma helps grandpa's feet remember how to dance. That is enough for her that sometimes his feet remember.

Sarah Lynn's use of sound and meter make this a fun read. Although an unconventional topic for a children's book, it is a story that will touch adults and children alike whether or not they know someone suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's. It teaches valuable lessons while still being entertaining. Valeria Docampo's vivid drawings make the characters come to life and jump off the page.

Emma stood on Pop's shoe and he "clickety-clack, clickety-clack, buffalo-step-stomp" danced around with her. He was teaching her to dance and feel the music with her feet while Gram smiled and knit a scarf. When Emma grew older, they danced around the town. Every birthday was a special event as they put on a special "clickety-clacking, tip-tapping show." Everyone smiled, laughed, and clapped at Emma and Pop when they performed. Yes, even the dog. After the show, "Pop and Emma would puff up their cheeks and blow out her candles together," that was until things began to change. Pops was changing and that clickety-clack was no longer in his step.

Pops began to forget things and no longer danced or even walked the dog. Emma had to blow out her own candles and the show no longer went on. Pops sat in the rocking chair on the porch with the dog at his feet, the dog he no longer walked. Emma's feet weren't doing that clickety-clack, but instead went "clunk stomp thud." She no longer heard the music. Emma cuddled up to Pops on the porch and pressed "her lips to his scratchy cheek," but a "smile danced in his eyes, then melted away." Where had Pops gone to and would that clickety-clack buffalo-step-stomp come back?

This is a happy-sad tale of Emma and her clickety-clack dancing Pops with Alzheimer's. Emma and her grandfather shared a love of music and dance from before the time she could walk. When he started to drift away, Emma became sad, like many children, and didn't know quite what to do. Of course Pops was still Pops and she loved him dearly. The full-page, full-color artwork rendered in gouache and pencil, are very vibrant and colorful. If there is a tip tap Pop or Grams in your child's life, this would be a perfect tale to read and discuss with them.

Plot: Emma's Pop teaches her to tap dance at an early age and the two bond for many years, until one day Pop forgets how to dance and even forgets Emma. Adult readers will instantly recognize that Pop has Alzheimer's disease. In the end, however, Emma is able to spark his memory once more and the two briefly tap dance together. Gram points out that while Pop's mind forgets, his dancing feet still remember.

It's a bittersweet story of love, hope and a disease that impacts millions every day. I was certainly not expecting this book to take on such a serious topic when I picked it up, but now I wonder why there aren't more like it. Alzheimer's is bad enough for adults whose parents are experiencing it, but it's easy to forget the young grandchildren who also dearly love their Pops and Grams. Emma and Pop's tap dancing relationship is special, but their bond is not unique. I think this is a great book to put some context to a real-life situation that may be tearing a young child apart.

OVERALL: Great illustrations and a sweet story with a grown-up message. Just be warned that this is a serious book. It has a happy ending and is cute throughout, but it's not just for giggles. It's a useful tool for explaining Alzheimer's is a way that young children can understand, while still leaving some questions unanswered so you can personally talk about them. I give it a solid recommendation!
