Product Description

An unholy alliance has formed between the west coast (bay area) and the big apple (new york city). Exemplified by famed percussionist Jaz Sawyer, who stirs up things in the Drumkit department. Boomboom Room, Murky Bell Flock and Rock Steady are names of some the beats Mr. Sawyer let's loose on this production. Sticks are hitting drumskins in a most unusual, yet infectious manner.

As one of the most sought after trumpeters of his generation, Mr. Eubanks' contribution is a clear tone, lyricism and abstraction laced with deep emotions. While his playing has been compared to Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown and Miles Davis, Mr. Eubanks work with Rocket shows that the sky is the limit and and his creativity knows no bounds.

Rocket's rhythms are singular creations, kept alive by a section that ushers in a new generation of groove. Mr. Carter s bass has been heard with a variety of historic drummers, reaching from Jimmy Cobb to Joe Chambers all the way to Eric McPherson. On this occasion he can be heard in a new context, sporting the electric bass and making his presence felt with a wide brush: dark textures, spurts of growth and an intense pump are expected.

This Pianist/Composer charts the course for the Rocket, letting her fly on her own while conducting, constructing and coordinating the travels. Ruffler's music has a uniqueness the NYTimes dubbed "a sign of the state of jazz". Compositions that are fully developed are his trademark, rhythms get combined with melodies, tenor and countermelodies may get swapped out - or entirely inverted. The results are crystal clear.

The beauty of birdsong is not unknown to flutist Michel Gentile. Air flows across an opening and strikes against the sharp further edge: air vibrates and the sound travels outwards. Mr. Gentile manipulates this wondrous moment to create whistling and airing of extraordinary dimensions. The flute makes us reflect from far above and takes us into the heavenly regions of the stratosphere.

When low notes are lined up on beads, bouncing up and down on a string, this bassist will walk across water. Along the straits, from the Capverdean Islands to NYC. Mr. Blanchard has a name, this is clear -but in this performance we see true commitment to the large propeller that pushes the Rocket upward and outward.

There is a perfectly curved soundwave that generates a straight line. A paradox? Not for the vital Mr. Golovnev, whose horn comes to life with Rocket. He pushes valves to adjust pitches, but the essentials of the expression come from his personal aesthetics.

A substantial tenor tone warms the soul and stirs us deep inside. The lower octave of many of Rocket s cavernous calls moves from purple to orange and Mr. Niewood s horn sings. Having recorded with Jack DeJohnette recently, this saxophonist wastes no time on empty gestures.

The two elements that make up a clarinet are from different times: Early bronze age hardware is activated and young woods whispers. A cry rings out! The bass-clarinet lowers itself into the bottom range and blows cool air onto bass and organ, evaporating itself into thin air, then fattening up dramatically.

Rocket, a newly formed group consisting of internationally acclaimed musicians, has completed their debut album for Pursuance Records. The resulting recording contains an infectuous mix of rhythms, textures and melodies. Combining dance grooves with catchy compositions and extended space-jams, the band creates a fresh and accessible instrumental style. You can expect to hear California Soul, Fela Extensions and 80 s Miles come together to form a new genre that has been dubbed Disco-Jazz by listeners. Listen to the title track Tipp Topp (#1) and Bahia (#7).
Trumpeter Duane Eubanks, the younger brother to guitarist Kevin and trombonist Robin, propels the music with inventive melodic lines, creating a classic and ultimately enchanting horn sound. Jaz Sawyer is best known for his drumming with the late Abbey Lincoln. On Tipp-Topp he puts forward a variety of highly syncopated and well architected grooves. Rashaan Carter has been playing bass in Wallace Roney s band for several years and switches to electric bass for Rocket. Along with this core group we hear some of New York s hottest instrumentalists: Bassisst extraordinatre Patrice Blanchard, flutist Michel Gentile and trumpet sensation Vitaly Golovnev perform on three selections. Sam Sadigursky and Adam Niewood contribute additional reeds throughout the record.
Composer Emanuel Ruffler has made a name for himself as an important creator of modern music. His tunes have been picked up by artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, drum legend Joe Chambers or fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro for one of his commercials. Ruffler won the Thelonious Monk Composers Competition in 1998. His first Pursuance release, Nightflight (PRER01), received critical acclaim and international airplay. Bruce Lindsay writes on All About Jazz: Nightflight is an atmospheric album. Ruffler has composed a set of tunes that have an almost cinematic quality to them... characterized by an apparent simplicity and a propulsive rhythm, creating an immediately appealing recording.
With Rocket, Ruffler s compositions are breaking new ground. Jaz Sawyer describes the band s creative process: With Rocket we are bringing together a number of musical developments that we have been making as individuals and as a collective. I think that we are all committed to a new direction - one that expresses our feelings in a way that fits the social environment. Nothing stays the same... --Pursuance Records Press Release
