The Tippmann 98 Custom Pro is made of die-cast aluminum with an extra-sturdy black finish. More significantly, the marker boasts Tippmann's Anti-Chop Technology (A.C.T.), a system consisting of a rear bolt, front bolt, and linkage arm with movements dictated by the location of a paintball in the chamber prior to firing. If a paintball is fed correctly, the system's front bolt and rear bolt travel together--connected by the linkage arm--to fire the ball. However, if a ball is lodged inside the chamber incorrectly, the system moves the bolts independently until the lodged ball falls into position. Once the ball is back in place, the marker cycles itself to discharge the ball at normal velocity. Not only does the A.C.T. system prevent stalls and "blowback" (a sudden release of trapped air into the hopper), but it also maintains shot velocity, as the cycle speed never changes. It's a must for the serious paintball enthusiast.

Additional features include a quick-release feeder elbow, a removable front grip (for adding an expansion chamber and vertical kits), and a 200-round hopper. The Custom Pro¿ line markers come equiiped with an 11" barrel, a double trigger and a drop forward factory installed! Tippmann's new Anti-Chop Technology is a complete new system consisting of a rear bolt, front bolt and linkage arm with movements that are dictated by the location of a paintball in the chamber prior to firing. If a paintball is fed correctly, the system's front bolt and rear bolt travel together - connected by the linkage arm - to fire the ball. However, if a ball is lodged inside the chamber incorrectly, the front bolt will stop moving forward as soon as it makes the slightest contact with the lodged ball. The rear bolt continues moving forward, but is momentarily disconnected from the linkage arm until it hits the marker's air valve. Upon reaching the air valve, the rear bolt is quickly forced back as it reconnects to the linkage arm, which pulls the front bolt back into firing position. While the two bolts are traveling back together, the lodged ball falls into position and the marker then cycles itself to discharge the ball at normal velocity. Competitive systems are typically just spring-loaded bolts, which require you to re-cock after each ball jam. Shot velocity is maintained with Tippmann's new system because its cycle speed never changes, unlike with spring-loaded Anti-Chop bolts that stall slightly when encountering a lodged ball. In addition, "blowback," a sudden release of trapped air into the hopper that often breaks paintballs and creates a big mess, is also eliminated because Tippmann's Anti-Chop Technology maintains consistent airflow in the marker whether there is a blockage or not. The custom pro is an excellent beginner marker that functions very well as is, or can be upgraded with the vast number of accessories Tippmann has to offer. With the ACT technology, I have yet to break a ball when shooting on average 3-4 balls/sec. The gun is very durable has worn very well so far. The hopper features a quick "disconnect" that allows you to gain entrance to the chamber and barrel for field cleaning that doesn't require removing the entire hopper, it simply rotates on a built in hinge. This seems like a very useful feature, but as I mentioned, I've yet to have to clean out a ball break. Another advantage to this marker is its acceptability for paint. I have used tournament grade down to Walmart specials and have had no problems in firing or breakage. The only downfall I would attribute to this gun is the complex and precarious internal components. It isn't a problem, just don't open your gun up in the middle of the field for repairs or oiling because you'll definitely risk losing some parts. There is a reason why most commercial business and probably 50% of the people out there own a Tippmann... they're realiable, durable, and have great potential for upgrades. You'll be happy with this gun.

I have a friend with a T98 that doesnt have ACT, and his gun chops balls every now and then, while mine has NEVER chopped any balls! (and I've shot a few thousand rounds with this). I've modded the gun to look like an AK47, and I must say that I'm very proud of it.

One thing to mention. The Amazon website recommends a certain stock to buy with this gun in a combo deal (as of Jan 07). THESE PARTS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH EACH OTHER!!! I e-mailed amazon about this and never got a reply (thanks jerks!) Thankfully I just sold the stock to my friend with the other T98. So the moral of the story here is that if you are ever looking for a stock for this gun, look for one that specifically states that it is made for Tippmann 98s WITH ACT!!!!! Otherwise the stock wont fit!

Bottom line: If you want a decent gun to start paintballing with, just shell out the cash for one of these, you'll thank yourself when you get addicted to paintballing and want to modify the beast.

This gun is great, great for beginners and pros. I used it in several large scenario games and it has not failed on me once. All the scenarios I played in were about 6-7 hours too and the only problem with this thing is the noise. It is a very liud shot so dont get this if you want to be a sniper or something. But for most people this is a good priced EXCELENT gun, dont listen to that other guy who gave it one star, I would recommend to him turning the velocity above 100fps so it shoots! And the A.C.T. is great doesnt chop balls with its slow feed rate! But this is the secind best gun because of the A5. The A5 is built like the Ak47, extremley reliable and is built like a tank. But if you are new or a pro in paintball, this is an excelent gun and well worth the money, and since it is a pro, I would recommend getting and E Grip and a Cyclone Feed System, then you almost have an A5 but at that point its better to get an A5.
