Worth it!,

This review is from: 101 Tips on Getting into Medical School (Paperback)
This book is a comprehensive and very complete guide for anyone who aspires to enter medical school in the United States. The writer, Jennifer Welch, is refreshingly honest about what applicants should do to increase the likelihood of gaining admission, but she is also very realistic. I am a third-year medical student who gained admission to my 'first-choice' medical school as an average applicant - in part by listening to Ms. Welch. She understands better than most what the Admissions Committee looks for in a potential applicant. It behooves any serious medical school applicant to capitalize on her experience by reading this book.

Ms. Welch has just made my life easier! I will be applying to med school and I've been stressed about the application process. After reading Ms. Welch's book, I have calmed down and feel more confident! She writes clearly and succinctly and has thought of everything. 101 Tips is the best resource I have found for applying to medical school, thanks so much.

Only book in its field written by a med school admissions director,
By Eric Luft "Author of Die at the Right Time! A... (North Syracuse, NY, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: 101 Tips on Getting into Medical School (Paperback)
SUNY Upstate Medical University Director of Admissions Jennifer Welch groups her tips into nine general categories, covering, in chronological order for the applicant: getting ready, beginning the application, getting letters of recommendation, writing the personal statement, presenting experiences, interviewing, waiting for the decision, reapplying (if necessary), and relaxing. She writes clearly, concisely, and conversationally.
She knows what she is talking about. She has dealt with thousands of cases and has seen literally every stupid mistake and brilliant coup an applicant can make. No self-help book on getting into medical school is more authoritative than this one. If you want to go to med school, Welch's advice is worth taking seriously.

This book provides just the most obvious tips. Examples include "be honest", volunteer in a hospital, be yourself, proofread your application, etc. That would be acceptable if the book explained each in depth, but no. The tips take up less than 90 pages (the rest is just a listing of every med school's contact info), and the pages are tiny with big writing and huge margins. I read the entire thing in less than an hour. This is a major waste of you hard earned money...there are much more insightful book availible. I did give it two stars because it had some funny tips, like "make sure your facebook/myspace is professional" and "there are 168 hours in a week".
Now consider this: Every single review as of 11/9/08 that gives this book a good review (four or five stars) happens to be the only review that the user has written (wow...something must be really special about this product that this is the only thing they have reviewed). There was one exception, but that person is from the same town as the author (and what are the chances of that considering how small Syracuse is?). Of course, this will probably change when I put up this review. I'm not saying the reviewers might be bias (though the author is a really nice lady)...just make of it what you want.

I didn't find this book to be incredibly enlightening into the app. process. A lot of the stuff was more common sense than anything. I expected more from a board interviewer from a school, so maybe I was expecting too much. I thought the medschool confidential book I got on here was a much better and informative read.

I'm a Canadian student who is in the process of preparing my application to US Medical Schools. My university does not offer pre-med advisement and the application process is quite different than here in Canada. Often, we can feel quite out-of-the-loop without a reliable source of information to turn to regarding the US application process and what schools are truly evaluating you on based on the application you submit, activities you participate in and interview questions you anticipate. I ordered this book because a former classmate of mine recommended it (he knows Ms. Welch) and I've found it really helpful. I've done a few things differently since reading it and before submitting my application to AMCAS. I hope it works!!!

Right to the point,
This review is from: 101 Tips on Getting into Medical School (Paperback)
I bought the book for a friends daughter and read it before I gave it to her. The book is full of insight that can be used in many different areas. Some tips are ones that you might guess are useful but it is clear that the author knows her stuff. Considering the total process of getting into med. school a book of this type is a must read.

I found this book to be very helpful. It gives you tips on the process of applying, how to have an outstanding application, financial aid information, and what to do if you aren't accepted right away or to your top choice school.

I purchased this book to assist with the application process and was disappointed. The title is misleading as the tips in this book are really just once sentence long and should be common knowledge such as don't lie on the application. This was not helpfull and I do not recommend it to anyone.

I would highly recommend 101 tips on getting into Med School for anyone who is working their way on getting in or someone who wants to see what the admissions committee looks for. It is very informative as it is written by a med school committee chair person. She gives insightful examples on everything from your essay, to your interview to what to wear. It gives you information that you would mostly not thought of otherwise, such as checking out the campus so you'll know if it snows how far of a walk it would be among with many others.
It truly is a great book, I highly recommend! |
