4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fuel for thought
Contains many interesting tips and tricks and plenty of ideas to stimulate one's creativity. However I felt some techniques glossed over some of the potential trouble spots and did not fully explain them. No doubt to cram in 250 ideas. Nice addition to a potter's library even though there was a lot of repetitive information that was in Atkins' book, Handbuilt Pottery...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
The book is set up nicely with good step by step and pictures to help guide you. I felt it would be better for beginners as there weren't too many things I hadn't already read about or even tried myself already. Overall a handy resource for your potters library if you're fresh out of ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful reference, January 30, 2010
This review is from: 250 Tips, Techniques, and Trade Secrets for Potters: The Indispensable Compendium of Essential Knowledge and Troubleshooting Tips (Paperback)
I teach a high school class on ceramics and sculpture, and found this book to be a terrific reference for my classroom. Students have already found several new and interesting ideas for their ceramic projects. I had checked the book out of the library and liked it so much I ended up ordering it for myself!

I picked up this book in it's first printing and was impressed with the broad rangeing tips in it. I picked up quite a few ideas from it. It's well illustrated. I feel any level of potter will get inspirations from it.

I love this book. Being fairly new to this art, this is the book I will continue to reference as my experience grows. As the cover says..." The indispensable compendium of essential knowledge and troubleshooting tips." And the book is not just for beginners....it's incredible how they pack so much info into one book. Well written and illustrated collection of "how-to's."

I bought this book for my father for a Christmas present. I knew he would never enroll in a pottery class - it isn't his style - but at 86 he has taken up pottery in a big way and needed some tips. He really dove into the book and within days was experimenting with techniques that were new. Right now he is working on a soup turreen for me and found tips for how to create a properly fitting lid. Since my Dad is a hard person to please, I know this has to be a good book. If you want to teach yourself, this is good book to have beside your wheel.
