Book Description

Tips January 17, 1998

A concise introduction to the time-honored fundamentals of typography and the digital revolution.

Some things never change: the anatomy of type, type classification, the principles of layout and legibility of the printed page. Other aspects of typography have been revolutionized by the computer and the rise of desktop publishing. This handy guide provides a rundown of the history of type, traditional usage, and the changes wrought by the widespread practice of typesetting by nonprofessionals. Calligraphy and b/w drawings throughout

1.0 out of 5 stars What? Title is misleading. Content is Horrid., September 14, 1998

I ordered this book before I saw the cover. I shouldn't have. Written in 1983 it certainly isn't up-to-date. Apparently it was updated in 1998, but I didn't see anything revised but a new introduction. The body type is hand lettered calligraphy. I am not kidding. Not only is it difficult to read but it repels any respect from a typographic efficianado. I'm sorry I wasted my money.

Great book! Extremely informative and interesting. Interesting font use for the body copy, but nevertheless great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good overview of basics of type, March 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Tips on Type (Paperback)
Sure, you can find newer books that will walk you through software to do typesetting, but this book has some of the timeless information to introduce you to what type is all about. It has some historic information about fonts, info on leading and layouts and so on.

I found this book at the library, and found it informative enough that I chose to buy it. The information did help me decide which fonts to use for a poetry book I put together. I recommend it especially for beginners, or someone who wants an in depth overview.
