Adult literacy tutors are often faced with the challenge of finding interesting, effective teaching strategies for reading, writing, and vocabulary development. Editor Ola M. Brown has addressed that challenge with a resource that incorporates the latest research on how adults learn to read and write. Intended specifically for tutors who want to use proven teaching techniques but who have limited time and resources, "Tips at Your Fingertips" offers dozens of teaching ideas as well as useful information on curriculum development, instruction, and appropriate reading materials.

Assessing the Adult Beginning Reader

For literacy teachers and tutors to meet the challenge of helping adult learners become competent, avid readers, they must first understand these adults as readers. Many times formal or standardized testing is used to obtain information about reading ability; however, this method has been found to have limitations for instructional planning. Nancy D. Padak, Jane L. Davidson, and Gary M. Padak explain several alternative strategies for exploring beginning adult readers' perceptions about their reading and reading abilities in the article "Exploring Reading with Adult Beginning Readers" from the September 1990 issue of "Journal of Reading". This list briefly summarizes these alternatives to standardized testing to help determine strengths and weaknesses of students. Based on information collected during this ongoing process of assessment, you can make decisions about what type of instruction your adult students need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of "Tips at Your Fingertips", October 4, 2010

This review is from: Tips at Your Fingertips: Teaching Strategies for Adult Literacy Tutors (Paperback)
As a relative newcomer to the area of tutoring adult learners, I have found this guide to be extremely helpful. I volunteer at a rather small literacy center and have received very little guidance in terms of strategies that would best help our students. Tips at Your Fingertips was a revelation and I have already begun to implement some of the ideas. I have even suggested at tutor team meetings that the center purchase copies for the other tutors. Its "environmental" or real world learning approach fits with the philosophy of our particular organization so the strategies found in the book have certainly reinforced what we are attempting to do.
