5.0 out of 5 stars Liquordelic Freakout!, June 16, 2004
This review is from: Tipsy Remix Party (Audio CD)
Very very Out there. Tipsy is a studio act that uses modern 'techno' techniques to make non-dance-oriented techno music. Loungy, sample-driven and surreal, they evoke exotica, bossa nova, jazz and film music in their cuts. So a 'remix' album seemed curious, as Tipsy really isn't 'dance' music in the usual sense...

And these 'mixers' aren't the usual Tricky/Chemical Brothers/Fatboy Slim types, either. The High Llamas? The Bran Flakes? These aren't people known for their mixology, so in a strange way, they are apppropriate for this wacked-out project. A few of the 'remixes' ( 'El Bombo Atomico', Suez Motel') are recognizable as derived from the original Tipsy cuts. But most of these 'mixes' are distorted beyond recognition, into new and wonderful weirdness, very in keeping with Tipsy's own attitude.

For example, weirdo underground faves Optiganally Yours 'remix' Tipsy's 'Cinnabar'. They aren't mixers, so after turning this subtle and loungy tune into a few bars of Heavy Metal, it then becomes...an Optiganally Yours song! Complete with cheesy drum machines, breathy vocals, and 'Fun Machine' keyboards. Just when you're wondering what happened to 'Cinnabar', it returns for a brief sample. It's so strange, yet it works (for me anyway). And a lot of the other remix artists 'personalize' the tunes, too. Some 'funk it up' a bit, but in a cool and appropriate way...

So, I think this is definitely in the 'Tipsy' spirit, and in lieu of a new album from them, it'll do nicely! Not to mention it contains 'remixes' of two songs, 'Flying Monkey Fist' and 'Schatzi A-Go-Go'(remixed by Matmos!) not found on Tipsy's own CDs.

Probably not for the newbie Tipsy fan, as a lot of the fun is 'finding' the original song in the welter of new samples and general weirdness. But, if you appreciate some experimentation, and you're not expecting a dance record as one reviewer below apparently did, check it out! ;>D

3.0 out of 5 stars A few bright spots, but generally uninspired.., April 16, 2004

This remix of Tipsy's earlier releases is promising at times, and disappointing at others. I found some catchy hooks in the first few songs... but I fell asleep around track 5. Some of the loops eventually become monotonous. I found myself torn between surprises and boredom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seksu Roba, Dim Dim, Flaspar!, June 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Tipsy Remix Party (Audio CD)
This album is pretty good. I especially like the more lesser known artists' remixes. Seksu Roba's remix is really good and psychedelic,Dim Dim's remix is good, and Flaspar's remix is pretty good as well.
