5.0 out of 5 stars excellent piece of equipment
I bought this from reading reviews of other owners. This is my first gun vise so I have no experience with others. After putting it together (five minutes - excellent instructions) my first thought was it's a little expensive for a bunch of bolts and plastic. 3.0 out of 5 stars Overall, it's OK.
The vise is a decent product with its weakest link being the clamp pads at the rear/butt stock end. The pads are cheaply designed and the clamping system itself leaves you somewhat "wanting." The versatility of this vise is its strength, accomodating a variet of firearms designs - bottom line... if you can get it on sale for around $65, then it's a good bargain. It's not...

I bought this from reading reviews of other owners. This is my first gun vise so I have no experience with others. After putting it together (five minutes - excellent instructions) my first thought was it's a little expensive for a bunch of bolts and plastic. After using it to mount two scopes on two rifles and to bore sight both (the old fashioned way), I was impressed with the thing. It holds the guns securely while protecting the finish. I would recommend it. But not having tried cheaper vises, they may work just as well with less expense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a non gunsmith, October 27, 2009

paid about a dollar more than you see now (10-27-2009). Never mounted a scope in my life, left it to the professionals. But I have cleaned a bunch of rifles, pistols and shotguns at the kitchen table. I hate laying a scoped rifle down! I hated even worse trying to clean my over and under by total dis-asemble every time. I have a Ruger 10/22. My daughter loves it and she thought it would be cool to put a scope on it. So I bought an inexpensive scope from Wally world (centerpoint for .22 with red /green light up reticle, which is pretty cool!). Got the Weaver rings for $10.00 at Wally World as well. Enter the Tipton Best Gun Vise! Wow! it works. 1st thing putting it together, about 5minutes of thought and 5 minutes of execution. Not the best directions, just don't drink beer while attempting! Just kidding! Anyway mounted the scope. Great vise for holding gun straight as an arrow. Dual clamps are wonderful at but stock end. Like the picture on the box, I put my over under with the center holder inverted to hold at the bend in the breach for easy cleaning. Just clamp But stock and clean. Warning! because barrels are pointing down, Hoppes or whatever solvent you use will go with gravity. Towel or rag on floor is required. Hope this helps, but I would buy it again in a heart beat!

This vise is made of very lightweight plastic and I would not describe it as particularly solid. Nonetheless, I haven't had any stability issues. I occasionally have trouble getting the gun just right on the vise. It can be a little awkward. Also, it turns out that I rarely need the vise function that props the splitting part of the gun up. That aspect is only handy for my over under shotgun which I don't use very often and I don't need it all for my rifles or AR. However, I needed something to hold my long guns for cleaning and it does work for that purpose but I'm not sure it's worth it's hefty price tag. Something along the lines of $50 would have been more appropriate. I wish now that I'd simply bought the cheaper ($40) version because my needs would have been just as well met. If you think you'll be cleaning an over/under shotgun a lot then I recommend this vise otherwise you might consider the less expensive model.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tipton Best Gun Vise, March 31, 2008

The transaction was very smooth and no hassle, rating the vise a 4 because of the stock end of the vise clamps are of plastic and flex quite a bit while holding the stock of the weapon in place. It does work well however and would recommend the gun vise to others looking for a good bench vise. Just be aware the stock clamps do flex.

The Tipton vise is well thought out, accommodating virtually any size gun and simplifying tasks such as cleaning, mounting hardware, adjusting sights. The only improvement I could suggest is making it easier to clamp the vise onto the workbench when using a sight drift, cleaning with a bore brush, or doing other jobs that require some measure of force to be applied to the firearm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy, November 5, 2010

This vise will accomodate almost any long gun and even some pistols can be clamped in the vise for certain operations but it is primarily for long guns. The center post is reversible with long and short towers which makes it great for breakopen guns like single shots, over/under, and my favorite, my AR. The clamps can be preadjusted so that you just place the buttstock between the protective clamp pads and squeeze the camlocks on each side and you're ready to clean, work on or even do a manual(remove bolt and look down the barrel) boresighting of a scope. Has a nice assortment of different shaped storage slots, some round, some rectangular to hold solvent, patches, brushes or other tools. Very strong and sturdy and made to last.

As the elected cleaner of all our guns I was always having a problem with the rifles. I knew I needed something better than what I had been trying to do in the way of securing them as I worked. When I saw the Tipton Best Gun Vise on the internet I tracked it down to a couple of stores just to examine it. I had my husband purchase this item from Amazon. It was the best price around. I am extremely pleased with this "vise". It is very well engineered and thought out. I can lock a handgun or long gun in it with minimal effort and control my cleaning efforts. I would recommend this product to anyone. It is a bit pricey but definitely worth it.

I considered Tipton Gun Vise as a better tool than not having one. The designed is great but the plastic material is NOT sturdy enough. I observed that the plastic flex as I turned the left and right wing handles to tighten the hold on the rifle. Then, the rifle is still loose enough to move a little.

I have only had the unit for a few weeks, and used it only once, but I have to say, it is well made. It was easy to assemble and seems to be made of good material. It fits all my different rifles and pistols and seem very stable. I do not have a lot of experiance in firearms service, but I feel this will be a great help in the learning experiance, JV
