The author tells a most fascinating story, and her researched detail is most thorough. Thus, no one can challenge the authenticity of this important piece of US history.

I was especially captured by:

*The excitement of rodeo participants.

*The origin of Europeans arriving in clay pots.

*The confrontation and compromises at Santa Paula, including the mystical appearances of rain and the sudden demise of two opponents.

*I personally felt some affiliation to the story, since I flew into Santa Paula airfield many times, as well as resided near Newberry Park and now in Santa Barbara.

*Most of all, the stalwart character and perseverance of Charlie and his ability to deal with diverse attitudes and emotions. Such abilities nurtured his successful achievements to preserve our national roots – things of great worth to us all.

I found this book to be easy to read and most interesting. It is a history, a biography and I believe an accurate accounting of Chief Charlie Cooke's life. I personally knew Charlie and am sad that he passed away just before publication of this book. He was so looking g forward to seeing g the completed book.

This looks like a good piece of local biography and it is on my list of "must reads" -- stay tuned for an actual review. I am including it as an important part of the Santa Monica Mountains Watersheds history reading list because of its subject matter.
