Life after Earth....,
This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
As soon as I saw the trailers for Titan A. E., I knew it was my kind of movie. When I realized there was a novelization that came out a month early, I went out and bought it. I was amazed. Novelizations usually are inferior to the movie, which means this is going to be a spectacular movie with great visuals (even if it is animated). The story is set fifteen years after the destruction of Earth by an evil alien species, the Drej. The few humans that survived are scattered throughout the galaxy. Cale is one such human survivor. A little boy when Earth was destroyed, he is now twenty, and still bitter that his father left him in the final moments of Earth. But it turns out that his father hid the key to creating a new home for the humans - a spaceship called the Titan. Only Cale can find it, making him humanity's last hope. But the Drej are looking for the Titan as well. This was an action-packed novel, and I can't wait to see the movie.

Perhaps /better/ than the movie..?,
By Tigrin (Southern California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
I first bought this book after seeing the movie back in June 2000. Titan AE really captured my heart as a movie, I just felt it was so well done and had such an interesting (and hardly seen) plot and characters, perhaps one of the best science fiction stories I've ever read or watched, and I felt really inspired me as a writer and an artist. I raided the book store after seeing the movie and picked out this book along with both Cale and Akima's stories, and this one was, perhaps, one of my favorites. I think it's great that they did an adult novelization of it, because not all of us are ten year old boys whose only interests are the lasers and the big bad aliens. I haven't read the book in a long time now, being caught up in other books since I discovered the fantasy genre (Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings in particular), but in a way, I felt the novelization was /better/ than the movie, just in the extra depth it put into the stories and the characters. The novelization is based on the earlier version of the film, so it has some scenes that didn't appear in the movie, which are interesting to read. I really enjoyed reading a novelization more on an adult reading level, and for sure I'd recommend this to anyone, even people who have not seen Titan AE yet, and if you haven't, I highly encourage you to. Don't let the box office fool you; this movie, for sure, was one of those small gems that just got out at the wrong time. It is highly unfortunate this movie didn't get the attention and credit it deserved (Disney exactly a year after Titan AE's theatrical release brought out the movie Atlantis, which I felt was like their imitation of Titan AE in both quality and style, though it didn't live up). For sure seeing this movie was one of the best things I've ever done, but it's all a matter of opinion. Find out for yourself.

An easy entertaining read for Sci-Fi fans.,
This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
Titan AE is a decent book, but written in the style of teenage fiction with adult themes. It is a fast read (3-5 hours max for avid readers), entertaining and action-packed. My only complaints are:1. Weak premise explaining the hostility of the Drej toward humanity (which is supposed to be a major plot line). 2. Slightly immature narrative tone throughout. 3. The epilogue, which is totally juvenile and somewhat insulting to the reader's intelligence. As seems to be common with recent Sci-Fi novels, movies, etc., Titan AE takes you on a wild ride, but doesn't really figure out where it is supposed to end up. I recommend it as an easy, entertaining bedtime story.

Awesome book!,

This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
I love this book. Most novelizations are the original story, but when it is made into the movie, it is cut down a lot, to save on time and money. In the novel, you actually have a better feel for the characters, because you know where they come from and why they act the way they do. If they put everything from the book in the movie, it would take 10 years to make and 8 hours to watch. I don't mind the curses or violence. It's sci-fi/action/adventure. If I were in the same situation, I would be saying the same curses, I am sure of it. It doesn't say on the book who it's geared at. It a big book with a lot of big words and isn't meant for young kids anyways. If you want a kid book of this movie, find a coloring book. This isn't a kid book or movie. 13 and up is all that is gonna like it anyways. The movie doesn't have fun Disney-like songs and cuddly characters. It is geared for teens and up anyways. This book is a lot of fun and a great story and paints wonderful pictures of the characters and scenes.

First of all, I am a fan of Titan AE. I feel the movie was well done, though the reviews may state otherwise. I read "Titan AE: Novelization" to get some answers I had after seeing the movie (a few times, let's face it, it's a good flick). What I enjoyed the most was how the book explained the Drej; who they were, why, some on their orgin & purpose. Which was great since it made them even more of an enemy than that in the movie! It fully makes you appreciate the end of the Titan AE movie all the more. For this, the book was worth reading. I gave this this novel 3 Stars. Mostly because it was well written (not referring to content). It moves along well & keeps your attention. If you are going to read all three novels from Titan AE, I would read this one first. Why? Because after reading the first two, "Cale's Story" & "Akima's Story," it derails much of the "human" connection that was shown in the first two; actually, it took most of the forming of the relationships away. So, the reader will themself have to rewrite the third book in spots to pull it all together. If you haven't seen the movie? Watch it first. If you want to know about the Drej? Read this book. If you want to read the trilogy? Read this book first, then the other two. It will keep the adventure a fun one.

An examplary film novelisation.,

This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
225 pages long and released in May 2000, the novelisation of "Titan: AE" has two authors on the cover; Steve and Dal Perry. Yet, the Perry's are listed as being one person. "New York Times bestselling *author*". At any rate...Novelisations of movies and video games are difficult to review, in that it is more than a little difficult to avoid saying the same thing over and over. "It's like the movie/game, but on paper!". But that's essentially what it is. And yet, even so, every novel of this unique type is different. The novel of Karyn Kusama's 2009 film "Jennifer's Body" was rather bizarre- and disappointing- in that it seemed to be intended for an audience at least a couple of years younger than the film's audience. "Titan AE" is different. This novel is if anything intended for an audience slightly older than those watching the film. I believe this to be the case due to the novel using at least one genuine curse word- not darn or something like that- more than a handful of times, as well as the generally more complex dialogue and descriptions. In the case of kids, there are certainly some who would be entertained well enough by the movie of "Titan AE" who would not be so interested in the novel. But that, really, is the thing that got "Titan AE", and Chrysler's short-lived Eagle brand- nobody ever really figured out just who and what it was there for. I am one of the people who believes that "Titan AE" was a good movie, one more interesting than many I have seen before or since. In fact, it captured my imagination to a degree that few other films ever have. I can say the same about this novel. It's well-written, contains many descriptions and lines of dialogue I wish had been put in the film- most notably the more accurate picture it paints of the warrior Stith. The plot I need not dwell on too much, not here at least- it is no different from the film, so I'll probably comment more on the plot when I review the movie itself. This is one of the best movie novels I've ever read. Steve and Dal Perry did excellent work writing this novel, and I highly recommend it. If you liked the movie, you'll surely like the book also.

The movie is better...,

This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
You've seen the movie, Titan A.E.? Great! Enjoy the show.
The novelization? This book won't give you a great deal of additional information, except that you will learn more about the light-creatures called Drej. However, the book lacks any additional complexity of characters or story. The movie gives you more in terms of expressions and attitude that you don't pick up in this book. Just don't expect too much...

I cannot describe how good this book was. I thought nothing could be better than the movie and I was right, but this book is the closest thing out there. I feel that Titan A.E. is actually BETTER than Star Wars. The way that Cale's and Akima's stories tie in together is very intuitive and well planned out. I recommend this book to sci fi lovers and people who just like to listen to cool stuff happen.

Entertaining to say the least....,
This review is from: Titan A.E.: Novelization (Paperback)
Basically I found this book to be quite entertaining. The book, in my opinion, is geared for the 13 and up crowd. If your looking for some hardcore Neuromancer, Matrix or Blade Runner....well this isn't it. But if your looking to get away to a fantastic world reminiscant of the old space tv shows (flash gordon) and references to starwars and independence day than this is for you. Overall...I would recommend it to anyone who is into sci-fi....except maybe those who enjoy cyberpunk...but hey...live a little...read this book!
