Book Description

With stars in her eyes, Alice Clarke boards the Titanic, heading to a new life. On board, she falls in love, only to lose him in the disaster. He leaves her with a pocketwatch, which holds more secrets than she realizes.

Her great-grandson, Michael Kearney, inherits her diary. When he overhears an unusual story about why the ship was wrecked, he finally reads it and finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy that stretches across a century involving some very powerful people.

With the help of Soft Kitty, an irascible conspiracy theorist, and his girlfriend, Sylvia, he must bring the truth to light and bring down the men behind it, no matter what the cost. Maybe some secrets are better left at the bottom of the sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read! April 12, 2012

This tale grabs the reader from the get-go and holds on until the very end. Told in the past and present, we are treated to an interesting possibility. Conspiracy theorists, this is your cup of tea! It was a darned good read, and it really piqued my interest to learn more about the Titanic and those who built her.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Living Story April 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
No spoilers.

A lot happened before the Titanic went down. Money was lost and lives destroyed, in many ways. Then the Titanic went down. Such a tragedy. But, was it an accident? From England to the shores of America, the Great Pond is strewn with secrets that seem have formed a bridge of echoes from one land to the other.

Titanic Deception focuses on the what, who, and why ... the when is a given, but you get all of that, too. This tale begins in 1911 and ends in present day. So much has happened, legacies have grown, but the conspiracy remains. After reading this book, you'll wonder if names have been changed to protect the guilty.

Government involvement? I won't say. On second thought ...

The Rakestraws have crafted an intricate tale of intrigue. They've also created characters that seem to live and have lived. The `who did what' is so accurate, so real, that the pages kept turning and I found the people who were to blame.

That isn't the whole story, though. The Chandler family legacy spans multiple generations, along with a nefarious conspiracy that, quite possibly, will outlive the family name.

And then there's the spirited romance. Spirited is not used loosely here. Michael and Sylvia are special characters who are as endearing as any I've read. Their relationship is born and grows with such realism, you'll feel like you know them.

I have one name for you - Soft Kitty. If there's an award for character of the year, he's getting it.

And guess what ... at the end of this story is a plum. Intrigue until the last period ... or was that a comma?

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is not a sinker! May 27, 2012
By Bonnie
Format:Kindle Edition
I like books that move right along and don't slog their way through the scenery, the good-looking guy/girl across the street, and the obvious. I'm happy to say, Titanic Deception moved along like a luxury liner on a straight-arrow course to paradise. Fast, but not impossibly so. Enough to keep my interest yet not so light-speed as to make my head spin. The narration delved into the past, then to the current day, and back again. It did so gracefully - actually pulling off that tricky time transition like a smooth sail on a breezy day. Nicely done, John and Toni.

The story is a "what if" - what is the Titanic did more than just happen upon an iceberg in a most unfortunate meeting of the minds? What if it was...nudged?

I don't want to throw you any spoilers. Suffice it to say that this book kept me wrapped up in every scene. I even read a chapter on my ereader while walking my dog. I was so engrossed that it's surprising I didn't step out in traffic.

The story is especially fun for those of us who enjoy a good conspiracy or two. I felt a special affection toward Soft Kitty and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Alice's history. Michael, the main character, is an easy-to-believe, likable and imperfect guy.

I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a good, quick-paced story with a historical leaning.

Interesting plot with several twists and turns. Worth reading. Thought it ended a little too soon. It could have gone on a little further for an ending.
