3.0 out of 5 stars The Titanic: A Lesson for Life
This is the first book I read on the Titanic. I was disappointed therefore when the author mixed fact with speculation as the event unfolded. I was confused as to what the truth of the situation was. However this is a fine book and an interesting read on the events that night. The author also subtily adds spirituality into the context which I enjoyed. The Gilded Age was a...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hows and Why of the Titanic Disaster, September 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
The Titanic is the story of the greatest ocean disaster of at least this century. This does not include wartimes naval tragedies for this event in 1912 did not need to happen. As the 2nd Officer of the Titanic,Lightoller, once commented that it was all against us that night. The events of that night and others that lead up to it are recalled with fresh memories. This due to the work of a Senator from Michigan and his committee who actually met the rescue ship Carpathia in New York and served many of the notables with subpoenas. The Inquiry was held within a week of the rescue ship arriving in New York. As time goes on the stories of fact get embellished to small and great degrees. This book deals with a source that was very fresh and thus gives a great read that fills in so many details. It is a book you can't put down I rate it among the best ever written on the Titanic. Right up there with the best author on this subject Walter Lord. Mr Wade did a tremendous job in his take on that incredible night the Titanic went down.

If you have seen the movie by James Cameron or any other drama of lesser quality, which speak for most of them, go and Buy the Book. When you finish you will begin to understand why the story of this so rumoured unsinkable ship stands the test of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Biased but excellent, April 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
Years ago, this was the first Titanic book I ever read, and it had an incredible influence on me. End of a Dream is a wonderfully-researched, wonderfully-written account of the aftermath, a fascinating subject given only a few pages in every other Titanic book I know of. However, it does have its flaws. I don't believe that Wade gives too much credit to Senator Smith, but I do think that in promoting his hero's place in history, he neglects some aspects of the story. For example, he pays too little attention to an area of the inquiry that raised many voices in 1912 -the question of whether news of the disaster had been covered up- as well as Philip Franklin, the major figure in that controversy. Franklin played a part in the inquiry almost as great as that of his employer Ismay, but he is a made minor figure in Wade's drama, as well as a rather ridiculous one. (He also gets his first name misspelled.) I don't mean to be over-critical of Wade, whose book was a landmark in Titanic study and remains one of the two best works on the subject today, but I do think that in order to increase the light shining on Smith he may have dimmed those shining on the equally interesting people around him. His book could have also benefited from a more appropriate title and cover blurb.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you've seen the movie (or even if you haven't) read this!, February 6, 1998
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
Hard to believe that anything so well-researched can read like a novel. Puts to rest many of the myths and legends which have grown around this disaster. Rather than single out a scapegoat (as the movie hinted at), Wade shows that there was plenty of blame to go around. Also shows how the Titanic (and the investigations) was the product of the times and culture, not an isolated event in history. Best is the chapter detailing the negligence of the "Californian" - in reality the closest ship to the point of sinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most outstanding, well researched, well written and most useful books in your Titanic library, December 14, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
I have read scores of books about Titanic and I can honestly say that if you are a serious Titanic buff you will likely find this to be one of the most outstanding, well researched, well written and most useful books in your library. The insights and conclusions that the author makes are truly satisfying to read. This books dispels a great many myths about the Titanic crew and it's performance in the hours leading up to the collision with the iceberg, as well as what they did and failed to do after the collision, most notably Captain Smith's failure to make sure that the few lifeboats they did have were filled to capacity. Of course, we know that they were not, and as a result some 500 people lost their lives unnecessarily. The book artfully examines the American Congressional investigation that convened after the accident, elucidates their findings in ways that other authors have not, tying together the many disparate threads found here and there in various books, leaving you the reader in command of detail and facts that put all the many "puzzle pieces" together. It's a great read, which I can wholeheartedly recommend. I only wish that I had found this book years ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, March 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
It was one of the best books I've read on the aftermath of the Titanic disaster. It made me think of how it effected history. You wonder what the world would have been liked if this had never happened. Would our world be the same as it is today? Also, the book gives an inside look on the proceedings of the inquiry in the Titanic disaster. It sometimes got bogged down in the politics of the time, but overall it's an interesting book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great inforamtion that's rarely heard, February 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
This book wonderfully presents information that is rarely available; that is, what happened *after* the Titanic sank, and how the incident affected society on both sides of the Atlantic. I've always been a Titanic afficianado, and much of this was news to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have volume for Titanic scholars, January 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Titanic: End of A Dream (Paperback)
This book concentrates on the US Senate investigation of the Titanic disaster. Mr. Wade promotes, and perhaps inflates, the part played by Senator William Smith in the entire Titanic epic, but his book is a well-researched account of the American reaction to the tragedy. Mr. Wade is a member of the Titanic Historical Society, and this book was produced with the Society's support. A must-have for every student of the Titanic.
