From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7 Sloan begins with the background of the Titanic, its construction, and the contemporary world of the luxury liner. He then covers the tragedy and rescue attempts, the various investigations, and the regulations that resulted. He also traces the recent efforts to locate and salvage the ship. The section about contemporary exploration is so current that, with the continuing exploration, it is in danger of being outdated soon, causing the book to become prematurely dated. However, the information is thorough, and the story is one which should attract even the most reluctant readers. Walter Lord's A Night to Remember (Bantam, 1955) presents a more personal account of the individuals who lost their lives, but Sloan's Titanic is an interesting account of a story that holds much fascination for young readers. The numerous reproductions and diagrams are of high quality and informative, and an appendix of ``Titanic Trivia'' provides some additional and more obscure facts. This fascinating account of a popular topic should bring the information to a new audience. Ellen S. Wilcox, Cinnaminson Middle School, N.J.

Gr. 4^-6. By now, the story of the mighty ocean liner
Titanic, which struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank, is well known to even the younger library users. In this updated reissue of the Watts First Book title, Sloan offers readers a glimpse of what it was like for passengers and crew aboard the new ship and then gives a detailed description of the accident and sinking. He offers thorough discussion of not only the rescue of the passengers and the inquiries afterward but also the work of Robert Ballard and his crew some 60 years later investigating the wreck on the ocean floor. Almost all of the changes to the earlier work are in the chapters that follow, which tell about later visits to the ship's wreckage, new theories on why it sank, and the recent movie and stage productions of the
Titanic's tale. Unfortunately, all diagrams and maps have been left out of this edition; however, it is a solidly researched investigation with just the right amount of information to satisfy elementary-school students.
