One more winner from Frank and his crew..., May 23, 2003
This review is from: Titanic (Audio CD)
I loved the quartet's release of jazzed-up selections from the "Les Miserables" score. I was less impressed by their work with the songs from "Smokey Joe's Cafe." Here is my third purchase, and I am happy again. I have owned the "Titanic" Broadway cast recording for four years now, so I am fairly familiar with the songs, which helps. What Frank, Jimmy, Bruce and Bruce have done with the addictive melody "I Must Get On That Ship" is worth the CD price by itself. This is 45 minutes of pleasure. Don't use it for "background" music until you have listened with earphones a time or two. The improvisations don't stray that far from the source material but are intricate and surprising. If you like jazz that is comfortably and competently pitched somewhere between hard bop and smooth, check out the Frank Dibussolo Quartet's CD's. If you are a fan of the stage version of the famous ship tragedy, add this one to your shelf and play it right after or right before you listen to the cast recording. You will easily double your pleasure.
