Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8?Sloan does a good job of describing the physical features of the ship as well as the tragedy as it unfolded. He also discusses the causes of the accident, why the loss of life was so high, the blatant discrimination against the third-class passengers, and the inquiries that followed the disaster. Several chapters focus on the attempts of various explorers, including Robert D. Ballard, to find and explore the wreckage. A final chapter shows how fascination with this story has influenced the creation of several movie and stage productions. The clearly written text incorporates some discoveries made since the 1988 edition (Watts) was published and provides a mostly new selection of contemporary and vintage full-page, black-and-white photos and reproductions. The prologue discusses the number of Academy Awards the film Titanic received in 1998. Updated "Titanic Trivia" and lists for further reading conclude the volume. With current interest as it is, this unique blend of oceanic and cinematographic history will be a useful purchase.?Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6. By now, the story of the mighty ocean liner Titanic, which struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank, is well known to even the younger library users. In this updated reissue of the Watts First Book title, Sloan offers readers a glimpse of what it was like for passengers and crew aboard the new ship and then gives a detailed description of the accident and sinking. He offers thorough discussion of not only the rescue of the passengers and the inquiries afterward but also the work of Robert Ballard and his crew some 60 years later investigating the wreck on the ocean floor. Almost all of the changes to the earlier work are in the chapters that follow, which tell about later visits to the ship's wreckage, new theories on why it sank, and the recent movie and stage productions of the Titanic's tale. Unfortunately, all diagrams and maps have been left out of this edition; however, it is a solidly researched investigation with just the right amount of information to satisfy elementary-school students.
