4.0 out of 5 stars A useful addition to your Titanic library, June 12, 2000
This review is from: Titanic (Hardcover)
In the trade, we refer to this as a book "printed as a remainder," i.e. a book intended to be sold inexpensively. But for an inexpensive book, Leo Marriott's "Titanic" is well worth having. Its selection of photographs is excellent and include real rarities like early construction photos of Olympic (it's worth noting here that a lot of the pictures printed as being of the Titanic, especially shots of her interior and many construction shots, are actually of Olympic. The reason is simple; Olympic was available for photography a lot longer than her sister ship was!), many of the famous Father Browne photographs (Browne, at the time in the novitiate and later a Jesuit priest, travelled from Southhampton to Queenstown on the maiden voyage and snapped away the entire time; Cameron paid tribute to one of his photos in his movie), and shots of the interior of an English hotel which is furnished with interiors torn out of the Olympic when she was broken up. Marriott also discusses the filmography of the Titanic disaster. Ignore the occasional typos; the book is well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was fun to read, May 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Titanic (Hardcover)
I thought this book was pretty cool becouse it informed me with new infromation about the book such as it had 2 sister ships about the same size as The olimpic and Britantic. And it told me that there was a huge dock that it had to be made in and theat it could reach 30 knots, one of the fastes of its time. Over all I thought it was a pretty cool book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Navigate around the typos for a treat, July 19, 2010
This review is from: Titanic (Hardcover)
As the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking approaches in 2012, this is the place to begin your understanding of what happened on that awful night. Marriott has assembled most of the key elements in his narrative, made more compelling by the numerous photos of Titanic, and artwork of the ship. One can only hope that an updated edition of the book will be released shortly, adding all the post-Titanic movie clamor, giving more credit to author Walter Lord, and surveying in better fashion the many Titanic movies. There also needs to be some more discussion of the quality of Titanic's construction, and the steel used in the ship, and he could do a bit on Nomadic, the tender used by Titanic in Cherbourg, which now is tied up in Belfast. He throws out interesting tidbits -- Titanic was not full when it made its maiden voyage, an unusual event; the crew was thrown together at the last minute; and numerous other ships were near the site of the sinking beyond the Californian. He, unlike others, is a beliver that Titanic's band DID play "Nearer My God to Thee" in the final minutes. A tantalizing question posed by him: Did a nearby Norwegian sailing ship ignore the Titanic's in-distress fireworks because it was involved in illegal sealing? The author, and readers, are done a disservice by the many typos littering this work, which nevertheless still needs to be on any Titanic buff's shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh look at Titanic, August 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Titanic (Hardcover)
This is a well-researched chronicle of the Titanic disaster, and I for one am grateful that the repetitive knot of famous Titanic photos are not reproduced here, and that many rare and previously unpublished outfitting pictures of Titanic and Olympic are offered. One thing I was disappointed in this book is that there were many a factual typographical error throughout its pages. Other than needing the expertise of a qualified proofreader, this is a welcome addition to any Titanic buff's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, well researched, written, and illustrated, June 30, 1998
This review is from: Titanic (Hardcover)
This is an excellent and very readable narrative with an abundance of good photographs and illustrations. Contains a lot of facts and arguments I have not found in other books. Only spoilt by numerous typos. One of my favorite accounts of the disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb introduction to the legend of the Titanic, April 12, 1998
This review is from: Titanic (Hardcover)
Definitely one of the best Titanic books. Contains interesting, high quality photos of Titanic's birth. Uses stills from films and paintings to illustrate the sinking.
