As good as it gets,

This review is from: The Titanic: Lost and Found (Step-Into-Reading, Step 4) (Paperback)
Ever since the movie came out, my 2nd grade students have had a fascination with Titanic. You couldn't ask for a better book than this to describe the ship, the passengers and the human pride and frailties that led to the sinking. This book is well-written enough that it is easy for young minds to understand and complex enough to keep them entranced. Even adults will find it interesting and, between you and your kids, your copy will probably be read to shreds in no time!

Appropriate in all ways for the target age group,

This review is from: The Titanic: Lost and Found (Step-Into-Reading, Step 4) (Paperback)
My 7-year-old read this (with a little help), and we were both fascinated. The story is told accurately but with sensitivity to the age level. It satisfied my son's curiosity, and he understood what a tragedy it was, without being overwhelmed with horrifying details. It was explained what went wrong, and there was reassurance that we had learned from the mistakes. And I liked the follow-up about how Robert Ballard and his crew found the Titanic years later.
Great illustrations, too, showing period clothing, etc. This is a really nice little book that seems to me appropriate in all ways for kids about age 7-9. And if you're getting this, go ahead and get "Moonwalk" by the same author. That one was downright exciting.

Well Written and Educational,
This review is from: The Titanic: Lost and Found (Step-Into-Reading, Step 4) (Paperback)
This fabulous children's book recounts with wonderful illustrations and simple language the tragic and familiar story of the Titanic. When the movie came out my children (then 5 and 8) were not allowed to watch it (why ask for nightmares? ). This book, carefully written with attention to detail, was sufficient to satisfy their need to know about this event in a manner that was sensitive, appropriate and accurate. There is even a picture in the first chapter that shows a cut-away style picture of how the ship was set-up: "Fancy rooms" on the top decks, swimming pool and squash courts at the bottom, and all kinds of rooms in between. Someday my children will be old enough to handle the feelings that the movie evokes, but until then, (since we live in Washington State) I want to be able to use a ferry once in a while! I'm very thankful for this well written, historical children's book!

This book tells the story of the Titanic in an easy to understand format for young readers, yet is very accurate. My four-year old son absolutely loves this book. I have looked at many books on the Titanic for his age level and this is the best one I have found.

My son (age five) saw this book highlighted on Reading Rainbow and was so taken with the story that I purchased it for him. We've read this book over and over. He loves it.

I could not even breathe when I finished the book!,

I was sad when the men died and it was not fair for the poor people when they tried to get saved. The Titanic couldn't get past the iceberg because there was a wall of icebergs. There was another ship nearby, but they didn't understand that the Titanic was sinking. I am eight years old.

This review is from: The Titanic: Lost and Found (Step-Into-Reading, Step 4) (Paperback)
This wonderful children's book explains the history of the ill-fated ship, from the beginning of its maiden voyage in England to the discovery of the boat at the bottom of the ocean depths by Dr. Robert Ballard. The illustrations are lively and vibrant, giving depth to the easy to understand, yet enchanting text. I have read several children's books about the Titanic and this one seems to have the best of everything.

Excellent series to get children interested in non-fiction,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Titanic: Lost and Found (Step-Into-Reading, Step 4) (Paperback)
I purchased these books (most of the titles in the series) several months ago, but have been doling them out a little at a time to my daughter, who is currently in first grade. She loves to read fiction, and has devoured many of the chapter books I've purchased for her or checked out of the library. I was looking for an interesting series of non-fiction books for her, and these seemed like the perfect introduction to the genre. The appeal of this reader lies mainly in the way the information is condensed to suit the needs of young readers - informative, yet not overly descriptive nor steeped in jargon. Also, the illustrations on each page motivate young readers, especially visual learners like my daughter. There are lots of illustrations in this book, covering the ill-fated journey of the Titanic. The Step 4 readers are described as "reading paragraphs, containing challenging vocabulary, short paragraphs, exciting fiction and non-fiction, and recommended for Grades 2-3", though children who are younger and are at an advanced reading level will find these books interesting and suitably challenging as well. |
