Titanic Voices deserve to be heard,
By A Customer
This review is from: Titanic Voices: Memories from the Fateful Voyage (Hardcover)
Titanic Voices presents vivid accounts of the construction, victualing, sailing, and sinking of this virtually unsinkable ocean liner. An exhibit in Southhampton, England spurred the creation of this book, which utilizes period newspaper articles, oral histories, and many previously unpublished photographs to help people understand the personal significance of the disaster. A highlight is the inclusion of accounts of many crew members, who are often ignored in other volumes on the disaster

A fascinating historical record,

This review is from: Titanic Voices: Memories from the Fateful Voyage (Paperback)
... As the Introduction makes clear, this book was written to chronicle the associations between the Titanic and the town and people of Southampton. ... it is a fascinating and detailed record of considerable interest to any true Titanic historian, (as opposed to someone whose knowledge of the ship is based entirely on that dreadful movie). ... This is a fine collection of anecdotes, letters and photographs, many of them not found in other books, and a fitting tribute to the 686 crew members who were residents of Southampton who died in the disaster. Also recommended - The Odyssey of C.H. Lightholler by Patrick Stenson - the astonishing life story of Titanic's Second Officer.

This is a GREAT book. It's about the Titanic's birth'till years after the sinking. It feels like you're in that time space of 1907 to 1912, reliving every moment of her history as you read through this book. It's a must have for anyone who wants to hear the cries of that faihtful night when she sank. Elona Zeelie, South Africa

This review is from: Titanic Voices: Memories from the Fateful Voyage (Hardcover)
This book was amazing. It took me inside the lives of those who survived and those left alone without thier loved ones. This book answered questions I often wondered about. I wanted to know what happen after the tragedy, how it affected those left behind, the towns/cities the victims and thier families hailed from. I wanted more and this book gave it to me and then some. I enjoyed reading it. If you are a fan, please read it, I think you will also feel compassion and heartfelt sorrow for those who were lost and the loved ones left behind. Hopefully this book will answer your questions as well. This book gives you the inside scoop (per say). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Disappointing,

A view of the Titanic from the perspective of Southampton and its people, mostly represented among the crew. Lots of contemporary pictures and overwhelming minutiae, often quite tedius. Not good for the casual reader, although could be quite valuable to someone looking for insight. The biggest shortcoming, all too frequent with books about this event, is a nearly complete absence of criticism of the behavior of the crew and the ship's owners and an ad nauseum repetition of the same well known stories of glory.

The book was hard to follow and full of uninteresting trivia,
By theatrebiz@aol.com (Chicago IL) - See all my reviews

The book seemed to be organized in chapters but the author wandered around within the chapters making it very difficult to follow. The information was not particularily interesting, I was expecting real perspective of the people who survived and even information about people who didn't. I would have also found it more interesting if, any of the people who supposedly had premonitions, had actually had them before the ship sank, not an interpretation of an event after the sinking. I have read several other books that are much better, including Walter Lord's. |
