Editorial Reviews

Review

Materials and Corrosion - Werkstoffe und Korrosion 5/2004

From the Back Cover

Titanium alloys are well known as materials for the aerospace industry already since the 1940s. Nowadays, due to their superior properties- high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance – they find increasing applications in chemical engineering, for body implants like hip replacements on in the off-shore industry, energy or automotive industry. Not to forget the increasing demand of the sports and consumer goods industry, e.g. for golf clubs, bicycles or jewelry, that make titanium a part of our everyday life already.

This handbook is an excellent reference for materials scientists and engineers that need to get more knowledge about the development, processing and application of titanium and titanium alloys. Following some introductory chapters about the fundamental materials properties of titanium the reader finds thorough descriptions of the development, processing and properties of modern titanium alloys. Furthermore, applications of titanium and its alloys in aerospace, medicine, energy and automotive technology are discussed in detail.

This review is from: Titanium and Titanium Alloys: Fundamentals and Applications (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book for any person who wants to gain indepth knowledge of Ti and Ti alloys right from the basic. Very informative, well written and well-presented with illustrations, this book is equally good for a beginner or a researcher in Ti alloys. Each chapter starts from the fundamentals and then covers the topic thoroughly. I think, almost all the aspects of Ti & Ti alloys are covered in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning with Titanium's material technology, June 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Titanium and Titanium Alloys: Fundamentals and Applications (Hardcover)
Recently I bought this book to gain some deep knowledge about Titanium. I am used to deal with some Titanium materials cause currently I work in Heat exchangers build up, but also limited on SB-338 Gr2, or also known as Grade 2 cp Titanium. Having experience in such field, I found some minor inacuraties when dealing with my job's field, but in any case, just minor things.

In the other hand, this book covers the very basics of Titanium, and the most advanced designs in metallic material's science. This implies strong points, and also weak ones:

The strong ones: If you have some knowledge in materials technology, it is quite well written and self explanatory. This book enters in the very basics of metallic material's science, making reader to get deep trained in advanced metallurgical processes, at least in theory. Strong references are also available.

The weak ones: If you don't have basic knowledge of material's science, this book definetelly isn't for you. You will easily get lost with many technical materials basics, specially at microestructural formation theory, cristalographic planes and so on. There are very beautiful chapters about aeroespace materials, dentistry and general Titanium's use, with many ilustrative figures, but thats only what you will gain if no previous material's knowledge is available.
On the other side, cryogenics is not fully covered, although it is sometimes mentioned. Book mainly focuses on turbines technology's design, so other fields are not usually taken in mind. Radiation Titanium behaviour is also not covered.

To sum up, a deep insight into Titanium's secrets, but also average users required. After reading this book, your knowledge in Titanium will boost your knowledge in also material's technology. Not for material's novices.
