Unless my drink is in a cup with a lid, I don't often drink from straws, because it's a waste of plastic. My husband loves straws. He buys them by the hundreds and uses them every day. I thought the Strength22 Titanium Straws would be the perfect product for our family.

It turns out not to be as perfect as I imagined. The first time I tried it, I bit it. That surprised me, because I never realized that I bite my straws as I drink. I don't chew them, I just clamp down a little. My teeth let me know that on titanium straws, this was not okay. I had to adjust my sipping method.

My husband, the king of straws, didn't cite that as a problem. Instead, he proclaims the titanium straws too short. He likes large cups, and these straws simply don't reach like the plastic straws he gets from the supermarket.

For me, they are the perfect length for soda cans. I continued to practice drinking from them there.

These are strong straws. They are supposed to be able to pierce cans and cartons and fruit. I skipped the cans and cartons. What's the point? They open up. No need to stab them.

Now, fruit. What a neat idea. My kids wanted to try that. We squeezed an orange to juice it up and stabbed it with the straw. Hmmm. No amount of squeezing and sucking would pull juice out of that straw. Instead, the peel started falling apart and leaking on the other side. The straw was plugged up with peel and pulp. It was a no go.

The straws are easy to clean, as long as you don't stab fruit. I just throw them in the dishwasher, which I trust to squirt water up the straw and heat it to sterility.

Even though these are not as exciting as I'd hope for, I still enjoy them. I am learning not to bite my straws and I've sworn off stabbing fruit. I can reuse them. That's good enough for me.

This titanium straw is similar in size to a regular straw. It is the same width and slightly shorter. I am attaching a video that shows it next to a regular straw for comparison.

When I received this straw for testing and review from Strengh22 my first thought was to test if this straw is really made out of titanium. Both production and fabrication of titanium are complicated which makes it fairly expensive, and explains a relatively high cost of the single straw sold in this listing.

How to test if a piece of metal is really titanium?
1. It is non-magnetic, if a magnet reacts it is not titanium.
✔ The straw was not attracted to a magnet.

2. Does it have any grade markings?
✔ The straw has a laser-marked Chinese character and .22 on it
Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. I looked up if there is a standard way in which Titanium is marked and I did not not find one. The Chinese character means the straw was made in China, and China is the top producer of Titanium out the 5 countries that produce it.

3. The best test for Titanium is a gravity test, i.e. measuring a ratio of weight to volume.
♦ Titanium and its alloys range closely around 4.5 g/cc.
♦ Aluminium is noticeably lighter (2.7 g/cc).
♦ Iron and steel are distinctly heavier (7.8 g/cc).
♦ Tantalum is much heavier (16 g/cc).
♦ Niobium is about the same as brass (8.5 g.cc)
♦ Copper, bronze, and brass are up to 9 g/cc
♦ Water is 1.0 g/cc.

I used a postal digital scale to measure the weight of the straw, it came in at 0.57 grams.

I bought one of these titanium straws for my daughter. She is always giving my grandson straws to drink from to reduce cup-tilt-spills.

I recently visited and asked her whether the little guy liked it.

She rolled her eyes and said, "see for yourself." and gestured toward his playroom.

From the sound effects coming from his 5 year old mouth, it sounded like it was some sort of lazer or fire shooting weapon that his robot toy was using against a giant alagator toy.

Anyway it's been his favorite toy for about two weeks now.

Oh, and he uses it as a straw too.

First time I saw one of these titanium drinking straws was on Oprah and I mentioned it to my husband. A couple of weeks later he surprised me one afternoon with one for drinking my ice tea. Now we use them on a regular basis in our household; we have several right next to the spoons and forks. Cold and hot liquids now bypass the sensitive teeth. The bend of the straw is just right for an elegant sip. I use a hummingbird feeder brush to clean the inside of the straw then pop in the dishwasher for a good wash. Feels good not to be adding more plastic straws into the landfills.

Sorry, but this just isn't a "smoothie straw". It's not large diameter; it's a small-caliber straw, for liquids, not smoothies. Smoothies and milkshakes require a large-caliber straw, unless you enjoy trying to suck golf balls through garden hoses...
What this is, is a nice titanium straw. What makes it worth more than twice as much as the almost identical ones that come in a four pack elsewhere on Amazon? It has a nifty little Chinese character printed on it, it is infinitesimally larger diameter, and a half-shade darker. Does this more than double its value? You decide!
Two stars for totally false advertising and high price, nice straw otherwise.
