4.0 out of 5 stars "Inferior construction, even for an Autobot. One good whack, it breaks in two."
This version of Optimus is one of the better ones that I have seen in a long time. I think this figure is from the War Within series, set well before the G1 cartoons when the Autobots and Decepticons are still on Cybertron.

This version of Optimus Prime is from the "War Within" storyline featured in the comic books. It is representative of Optimus Prime as he was when he was a much younger Autobot just given the leadership role on Cybertron. The story that deals with this version of Optimus Prime is not the one from the cartoon series that most people are familiar with, and doesn't look like Optimus except for the face and colors.

When you look at the toy in the box it looks very solid, and it feels heavy too, as it should since it is mostly cast metal. Onfortunately its the plastic bits that were fit into this toy that keep it from having 5 stars.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a purist who says a little plastic is a bad thing. Unfortunately its execution in this toy is not done well. Basically the plastic parts are all where crucial hinges are, like Optimus's arms and legs. I had managed to pull one arm off before I even got the toy out of the box. Also when transforming him I tend to pull off arms or legs almost every time.

Luckily the arms and legs snap right back on, so I can keep playing with my toy. Unfortunatly the same plastic parts that come off easily don't provide a ton of support for the heavy cast iron parts, so some poses that should be posible with the great articulation on this toy aren't because the hinges just aren't strong enough. Either the arm of leg will move because of the loose plastic, or the arm or leg will come off.

Now it seems like I am bashing the toy, and I am really not. I actually enjoy this toy, but it would not be something I gave to my kids to play with because parts come off it too easily.

Aside from the poor plastic hinges the attention to detail on this toy is really great. The robot mode, while not being the classic Optimus Prime still feels and looks like Optimus unlike many other toys with the name. The paint job is well done and even has some fake "weathering" to make the toy look like it has seen some hard battles and tough times. Even the car mode is insteresting to look at, and although different from the Optimus we grew up with still "feels" like optimus.

Overall its a good toy for a grown up or older child, and is a must have for any collector, but lacks the durability in the joints to be recommended for younger children.

This version of Optimus is one of the better ones that I have seen in a long time. I think this figure is from the War Within series, set well before the G1 cartoons when the Autobots and Decepticons are still on Cybertron.

As far as design, I really like the look of this Optimus. The head design and the color scheme is kept consistent to the original to give an impression of the same character. The body proportions in robot mode is nicely balanced, and the arms and legs are well articulated. The alternate mode also looks very cool. The cybertronian truck looks nice and sleek. This Optimus uses the same famous gun from G1 that makes all the Decepticons run and hide. The transformation is nothing we haven't seen before, but in this case it's not really a bad thing.

The toy itself is made mostly of diecast metal so it acutally weighs quite a bit for a figure of this size. However, the metal pieces are connected by small plastic joints. This makes the key articulation points really loose as the plastic joints cannot really support the weight of the metal pieces. Posing the figure thus becomes difficult, and during transformation it is not uncommon for the arms and legs to come off altogether. Getting this guy out of the box also took some effort.

I cannot recommend this as a toy for young kids because it is just too delicate. However, for the fans of Transformers that grew up with G1 or just collectors in general, I really recommend this figure for the great design and cool transformation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Die cast Optimus, August 5, 2006

A nice chunk of metal, this item has great detail however it makes a better display peice rather than a transformer. The transformation is a little unstable but it does work. A great peice to show off a poor peice to play with. A great addition to any collector.

I wanted a toy for my grandson - not a collectible. It came in pieces with no instructions. When I was shopping, I made sure I avoided buying one that said it came without instructions. I was very disappointed and it was not at all worth the money,

he comes with his blaster rifle, and is fully transformable. he is made of high quality die cast metal.

this is a great display piece.not to be missed.
