All about Eve,
This review is from: Tits, Ass, and Real Estate (Paperback)
In her own inimitable way, Eve Gilbert's twisted view of American reality is the truth - the truth about how men relate to women, how people live in the city, how people survive in crap jobs, and more - told in a funny, grotesquely charming way. Hers is an authentic voice, no pompous BS; her drawing style is loopy, loose, and unpolished, that is to say, perfect in its own imperfection. We love you, Eve! Buy this book, highly recommended!

Comics that are grotesque, but then so is life,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Tits, Ass, and Real Estate (Paperback)
This book contains examples of the grotesque style of comics. Unlike the earlier versions that had to be clean and with a positive, wholesome message, these are dark, sinister and unfortunately more accurately reflect reality. People are homeless, destitute, suffer from illnesses and seem to continuously be at most only one step away from disaster. There is racism, sexism, brutality, profanity and if the title is to be believed, it is largely autobiographical.
If you are someone who prefers to have their comics sanitized and unrealistic, then you will not like this book. However, if you are primarily a realist and can see beyond the superficial, you will understand the reality and appreciate the various levels of satire. |
