Customer Reviews

The sound is really good for a small machine nice and clean.

I live in the woods 100 miles north of Seattle, and I'm so very pleased with it's ability to pick up several NPR stations here.

No company that attempts to sell high quality products should have allowed this to happen.

I bought the older version of this radio which is functionally identical except the new one has an iPod cable connector. The Tivoli Pal is high quality. The controls are excellent. Though not stereo, the sound is excellent. It stands up to abuse, except the finish on the older Pal tended to chip a little. You can plug in an external source via a common "audio in" jack. No USB port, no iPod dock. I used it often for five years before having to replace the rechargeable battery pack ($25 via Amazon). It can play the radio while being charged. The FM and AM bands both work fine.

(Originally written in 2004):

I feel like raving about this radio, but I'm not in the mood to write a lot about it right now. Read the reviews. Most all it's attributes are here.

For naysayers and detractors, I can only say this: It was never designed to compete with a stereo boom box, whose stereo separation is overrated due to close speaker placement anyway, and it doesn't go as loud either. It's excellent for midrange tones and classical music. It's equalizer has been tuned to give the illusion of a lot of bass response by really working midranges, and in truth, it has surprisingly good bass response due to it's excellent long-throw speaker.

From a design standpoint, it is intentionally designed to do the most important tasks exceedingly well, and because it has no presets, it appeals to those to don't station surf, but have their favorite that they usually stick to most of time. What is has is an *amazingly* sensitive FM tuner capable of separating and locking on to weak and constrained signals. Even people living in Manhattan with all the steel and glass and interference are impressed by Kloss-designed tuners for their ability to separate confused signals there. I live in the woods 100 miles north of Seattle, and I'm so very pleased with it's ability to pick up several NPR stations here.

From my point of view, the only downside is cosmetic. It's hard sealed plastic case has a THIN plasticised layer on it, which makes if feel "grippy." That layer is not particularly durable. It'll start peeling off on the edges. I slapped some black gaff tape over the edges on mine, and I really don't care what it looks like anyway.

I wish it had a sleep timer....only because I'm too cheap to buy the alarm clock Tivoli...Ha!

Purchased for radio listening and playing mp3s from my phone on my deck. In Chicago, reception for wbez is great. As the manual notes, lowering the antennae, provides better reception in dense areas, allowing me to listen to wfmt, 98.7. I was unable to pick up the College of Dupage's radio station, 90.9, which I had picked up, though somewhat fuzzy, from my ex-girlfriend's Boston Acoustics Duo I plus. I got it refurbished for the same price as the Tivoli PAL.

Listening to Beck at full volume from my phone proved too big a task for this little guy, producing garbled bass.

If you're looking for a little radio that produces excellent sound at medium volume, this is your guy. Anything more and you'll need to move upward.

This radio gets excellent reception and projects sound that defies it's tiny size. The battery life is terrific once fully charged and it is a great travel companion. People love the sound and are astonished when they see how tiny it is. It's wonderful for picnics, the beach, the office and the patio.

I bought this a few years ago and initially was delighted with it. But after the warranty period expired, it developed problems. The rubberized coated started peeling and flaking off. OMG! My radio has leprosy! Keep in mind this has been babied and gently handled at all times. I am the only one who uses it so I'm sure of this. The AM/FM/OFF switch started causing problems. I had to wiggle it around to select the proper function and sometimes on its own it would change from AM to FM or vice versa. Very annoying for a radio in this price range.
After this happened, outside the warranty period, I called Tivoli one evening and listed my problems and they very kindly offered to send me a replacement radio at no charge. The radio I wanted had been unavailable for a while but a new shipment had arrived so they could send me the black color I liked.
All good, huh?
No!
The new radio has developed exactly the SAME problems as the old one.
I have two Model One Tivoli radios and have had no problems with those.
I would love to have one of the newer bluetooth Tivoli portables but I've lost confidence in the quality of Tivoli products and will look for another brand that has the quality in their products to justify the premium prices.
I don't mind paying premium prices for products that have a build quality that justifies their price point. Tivoli needs to do a better job monitoring their Chinese partners. Or maybe...they just don't care anymore.
I'm really more sad than mad; Tivoli used to make superior products, but based on my experiences with this portable, not anymore.
It still sounds great, though.
