It works great if you want to circulate cellar air.

This configuration definitely does not resolve the problem with the dampness and musty air particularly for larger basements.

Installed this item in a glass block basement window to help solve dampness/mold problen. Humidistat kicks dual fans on at any humidity setting you choose, Reasonably priced solution to this problem.

Love almost everything with this. Much less expensive that similar systems I researched. The only thing I am sceptical about is that the basement air pumps out right next to where the "fresh" air comes in. I wonder how fresh the air coming in is - not sure how much of a difference it makes since product seems to work.

I modified it to fit 4" ducts (adapters at home depot / lowes w some insulation tape - since 6 " are huge and had no room for them.

UPDATE 1/18/2013

DONT COUNT ON THIS TO REPLACE A DEHUMIDIFIER. MY BASEMENT IS ABOUT 800SF. GRANTED I RAN THE DUCTS SOME 20 FT AND REDUCED AIR FLOW STRENGTH - BUT THE HUMIDITY LEVEL WOULD NOT COME DOWN UNLESS I ALSO RAN DEHUMIDIFIER.

I DID NOTICE MUCH REDUCED ODOR

This is not rocket science. A basement needs ventilation. You could install an exhaust fan. You can then add an intake fan. Well. this product has both in a compact unit with a dehumidistat to boost. The beauty is that you can go all exhaust or intake, or one fan doing intake and the other exhaust at the same time! One single installation for all this. Need more be said?

This air exchanger does what it says. Our 100+ year old 24' x 44' basement was extremely damp and musty. Weeks after installation and to this day (a year later) the basement is not damp and the musty smell has just about disappeared. No complaints about construction, sturdiness or performance. Costs a few pennies per day to run.

Mounted in basement window instead of cutting hole in side of house. Used a wooden board and made sure it was sealed so no insects/animals can get in. It reduced stale/damp air in several days. It is a bit loud when both fans are running. Now I keep it running 24/7. Sometimes I switch to only one fan running.

Lately it seems like everything I buy just doesn't stand up to the hype. The Tjernlund Xchanger X2D is one of those products. First, the instructions for installation were pretty bad...luckily I have a fairly decent mind for mechanics and was able to figure things out through the typical process of elimination. Simple flaws in the manual such as the diagram for the rear brace showed the bent portion backwards...not too big a deal, but I could see how that could easily confuse some. Which screws to use where is not defined in the manual. The method by which the fans clip in is not as easy as it looks in the youtube videos. My clips were bent from the start...easy to figure out, but once you see how the fans clip in then you will realize how these are not going to last long if you frequently switch the direction of airflow. Even a $40 dual window fan from my local hardware store has a pair of switches that control the option for intake or exhaust direction.
Performance- poor, the fans are almost identical to the highflow 120mm panaflow fans that used to install into higher end computer systems. VERY LOUD for the cfm they push/pull.
A rather poorly designed humidistat is included, position this as far from the unit as possible or it will get a false reading...in my case (500sq ft), these fans will be running 24/7. I'm not even sure why anyone would need a humidistat since the unit is an air exchanger and not a humidifier. Drawing air in or drawing air out really shouldnt effect humidity unless you have a sealed environment. The control knob only fits on in one way, and the sticker on the knob was positioned inaccurately from the factory. Full on, in my case, reads as 48-49% and off reads as 35%...seems they couldn't even get the sticker placement right.
