Book Description

November 1, 2011
The official companion book to To The Arctic, a MacGillivray Freeman Film presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and IMAX Filmed Entertainment.

In this stunning, large-format, panoramic photo essay, renowned nature photographer Florian Schulz takes readers on a personal journey to the remote-yet-vibrant Arctic. In contrast to the common perception of the Arctic as a vast nothingness, Schulz's images display an ecosystem of surprising richness that is teeming with life. Following the cycle of a year, TO THE ARCTIC showcases a pageant of wildlife oddly captivating forms of muskoxen, waves of migrating caribou, and some of the most extraordinary images ever captured of a mother polar bear and her two cubs.
Schulz's range of imagery, accompanied by his personal stories from field, explores the remarkable diversity and drama of life in the Arctic. Complementing Schulz's work is a forward by Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, and a preface by Academy Award nominated film director Greg MacGillivray.

Editorial Reviews

Photographer Florian Schulz has worked many years to tell the Arctic story, to bring it to audiences who will never visit the Arctic, yet should understand its beauty and relevance. Florian's camera artistry has taken Arctic imagery to a new height, and I believe he's currently the most imaginative wildlife photographer around. --GREG MACGILLIVRAY, MacGillivray Freeman Films

5.0 out of 5 stars It's just like being there (minus the cold) April 17, 2012
This book is amazing! In pictures and in words, there's nothing like it. It's like a tour of a place that only very few of us might ever see, but is so important for so many reasons. This book isn't about politics or science, it's about the place itself and the animals that call it home.

The book is a companion to the IMAX movie "To The Arctic" which is starting to roll out across the US. I had the book first then saw the film. Both evoked a strong sense of connection to this this wild place, and a desire to ensure it's protection and preservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shines among others! December 18, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Have quite a number of nature photography books on my shelf, including's Schulz excellent Y2Y first book, and just after two days of its arrival has become my favourite one. To the Arctic is simply vibrant, with its incredible photos and a testimony of what we might loose in a few years, blame climate change and our greed for fossil fuels. 100% recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arresting June 25, 2012
This may be the most arresting portrait of the Arctic in print. The photographer's sense of wonder and artistic mastery rank him among the world's best. Do your friends a favor: buy this book for yourself, and buy a dozen for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars So impressive! May 8, 2012
If you are a person who cares about wildlife and our incredible arctic areas, this is the book for you.
It is so beautifully done, a work of art really.
There are 200 pages of images that will make you realize something needs to be done to preserve these areas and the creatures that live there.
We ordered this book as Christmas gifts for our friends and family this year and they all were so pleased
and impressed by it. I have never received so many compliments and thank-you's for a gift.
I highly recommend it to everyone! Go see the IMAX movie as well.
Our favorite nature photography book by far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Case for Action April 23, 2012
The companion movie is awesome, the book is awesome. Together they make a persuasive case for action to do what we can to preserve the artic or at least slow the rate of deterioration. To the Arctic is on top and a constant reminder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice book May 3, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the movie so much that I wanted to get the book. It is a large coffee table sized book, and the photos are very good quality. Most photos have a one line description, including where the photo was taken, which helped to clear up some of my questions from the movie about where certain scenes were filmed. If you liked the movie, or are just a fan of the arctic, you will probably like this book.
