Editorial Reviews

Review

"I have always been able to employ in real life what I've learned in my theatrical training. Peggy Rubin has now made that process available to anybody who reads this book. It's very readable and I highly recommend it." --Ellen Burstyn, Actress

"Peggy Rubin is a master of theater and the art of becoming. Her book-- a masterpiece in every way-- will hold you spellbound as you discover the drama of your soul and the purpose of your life. The unique expression of your essence--the Divine theophany that you are--emerges almost magically as you read this clear, penetrating, and insightful book and work with the exceptional exercises. Brava, Peggy" --Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., author of Your Soul's Compass and A Woman's Journey to God

"Peggy Rubin has written a wonderful book full of theater history and mystery. Her love of theater and wisdom about life brings the reader right onto the stage and into the essence of their own story and how they fit into the great drama of life. Bravo!
" --Michael Meade, author of The World Behind the World and The Water of Life

"If you are needing to clarify and manifest your life's purpose "To Be and How to Be" is a great guide. This profound book, filled with wisdom and compassionate understanding, offers you empowerment and the inspiration to live your true purpose in this incarnation. Learn through inquiry and practical exercies to be a fully awake sacred actor in the sacred theatre called life" --Judith Cornell, Ph.D. [Rajita Sivananda], award-winning author of Mandala: Luminous Symbols for Healing, Amma Healing the Heart of the World, and Drawing the Light from Within

"There are times when something you read has the power to stop your life in its unconscious rush forward: this book does that, and then again and again, it coaxes something more genuine to take shape. To take seriously these often deceptively gentle instructions, to give them the real chance to do their great work, just may be to find oneself suddenly, and quite radiantly, at home in the moment. Read, in other words, only if prepared to loosen yourself from the tight grip of your old stories and know your birth-right: the vast stage is always arriving right under your feet." --Sensei Bonnie Myotai Treace, Gristmill Hermitage, founder of Hermitage Heart & Bodies of Water Zen

Classical and Shakespearean actress Peggy Rubin presents To Be and How to Be: Transforming Your Life Through Sacred Theatre, a spiritual self-help guide to using the nine powers of the theater to empower oneself, explore the sacred stage, and pursue one's dreams. The nine powers of the theater are the Powers of Incarnation, Story, Now!, Place, Expression, Point of View, Conflict, Audience and Celebration. Chapters reveal how the metaphor of the play can lend new insight into the ups and downs of both earthly and spiritual life. "Once we understand that the breaking of molecular bonds is an essential part of the experiment of life, it becomes easier to recognize that breakups in the larger, outer world can also be necessary and held within the Power of Celebration." An invaluable guide, filled with exercises to revitalize the way one looks at oneself and the world.

TO BE AND HOW TO BE presents an entirely fresh pathway to self-understanding. I have been reading spiritual transformation books since high school (a long time ago!) and this book is enlivening me in an entirely new way. It reads beautifully, touches deeply, stimulates thought, and really gives the sensation of the soul being fed. Love of theatre and of Shakespeare are new mirrors for readers of transformational literature, and these are combined like nowhere else with a wide-ranging harvest of literature and spiritual traditions, and interesting insights from brain and energy research.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, and in retrospect, I'm glad I went into it without any preconceptions. Almost every page has little wits and witticisms of theatre that are easily traced back to your own life and your own experiences and tie smoothly into your journey through the world.

If you're like me, then when you fall in love, you hear every love song differently, and suddenly think that most of those songs were written about you.

In "To Be and How to Be" Peggy has gone a step further and created a way to see the world's history of passion and theatre come alive in the unfolding story of your life, and vice~versa.

For anyone who ever wondered what it all means and ever took comfort from the words or stories of the greats, this book is for you.

Greg Bullard

To Be And How To Be - Transforming Your Life Through Sacred Theatre By Peggy Rubin is an amazing heart work published by Quest Books. In the forward Jean Houston say's that, "You are about to enter a masterpiece so important, so radically original, so critically helpful that, frankly at first I felt speechless to comment on it. In this book you will become a passionate player on the stage of your own life's journey. You will find new heart, new mind, new voice and new expression. Most importantly, you will be drawn into the genius and magic of Peggy Rubin."

I totally agree with Jean Houston. I felt speechless and dazzled by the brilliance in this work. The concepts are so clear, uncomplicated yet transformative. This is the performance and this book is truly the work of a lifetime. According to Peggy we are all here to enact with our lives a sacred play. Each of us has the ability to go beyond the role of understudy waiting to play the role of this life time. We learn to step up and to take command of this starring role at the center stage of life. Peggy explains the Nine Powers which includes The Power of Incarnation, The Power of Story, The Power Of Now, The Power of Place, The Power of Expression, The Power of Point of View, The Power of Conflict, The Power of Audience, and The Power of Celebration, As the story unfolds and you masterfully connect to these nine powers you are able to come from back stage to the center stage of creation while manifesting, being and living your life with a greater understanding, purpose and power.

This is an incredible guide for one's life. Peggy Rubin gives you the power of now and eight others that empower you. In her tender, gentle, heartfelt voice, Peggy takes you one step at a time as you discover more and more about yourself, your gifts and your dreams. She takes you on a journey, helping you answer questions, such as: What am I born to do? What is my purpose for being? What unique gifts do I bring? How do I want to express my purpose, my gifts, my desires? How can I use the painful times to enrich my life? How can I enact my stories to the fullest?

Peggy's use of theatre, Shakespeare and myth provides wonderful new perspective on your own life and does not require prior familiarity with them. Her references provide those aspects of the stories that one would need to apply to one's own life. They also assist you in seeing your story or your play in an enlightened way, as rich as a myth.

On this journey of self-discovery, you become more alive and aware of your purpose, your story. You have more energy, more excitement as the star on the stage of life. You deal with your shadows and ultimately experience and celebrate your life as sacred. Peggy enables you to live joyfully and love the magical mysteries of life.
