Book Description

May 15, 2008
The author, born during World War II, grew up in post-war Germany, left his home in the early 1960s for South West Africa (today's Namibia) to work on a farm, ventured to South Africa, worked in a gold mine and on road construction, studied at the University of Cape Town, went to Canada and the US for graduate studies and through a myriad of events finally became Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While Professor at M.I.T. he founded the company ADINA R & D, which develops the software product ADINA used world-wide for the analysis of engineering designs and, in general, for the prediction of nature. The author tells about his life, how he grew up and developed in his profession, with the dream to enrich life through his activities, and how he found much happiness and success.

Names such as SAP, NONSAP and ADINA cannot but evoke the impressive cultural ferment emanating from Berkeley and MIT in the seventies. Particularly among several first-generation engineers of finite element era - those who have provided today's managers worldwide - these names recall powerful feelings.
To Enrich Life introduces readers to the human and scientific career of an outstanding pioneer of the finite element method, Klaus Jurgen Bathe. It should never be forgotten that a considerable part of Bathe's scientific work is incorporated - often seamlessly - in a number of everyday engineering computer tools. At the same time, it is moving to realize that so many remarkable achievements, which have gained worldwide recognition, were reached while their creator led an interesting but nonetheless quite ordinary life.
Undoubtedly, young researchers at the beginning of their university career will find encouraging insights in this fascinating story.

This book tells of the value system of a scientist, whose success in industry and academics are due to his character of positive attitude, sense of responsibility, determination to excel, and enthusiasm for quality. In this system, integrity is never compromised. I recommend that every stress analyst read this book because readers will find out how finite element method advances from the punch card stage to the present paperless environment of high speed computers, from simple static beam simulation to a complex vehicle crash/crush simulation. Structural engineers would benefit from reading how finite element methods have improved from the early period to the current MITC4 era. The author's quest to make a lasting contribution through his creation of ADINA is admirable.

I feel that the book is a genuine account of the author's trajectory
and approach to life. His continuous quest both for excellence and to
make a contribution in the field of his work is clearly revealed. The
author describes his childhood and youth years which are very
interesting and probably mostly unknown even for people who know
him. The book is a very enjoyable reading!
