I initially selected this item because of the reviews and what I was able to see from the "look inside" feature. When I received it in the mail it appeared more like a culminating thesis project than a lesson plan guide. The lessons in this book say "To Kill a Mockingbird" should be read in five days, which is unrealistic.

There are suggestions for assignments, and directions to go to certain websites to find information for post reading activities. There are journal prompts available for each of the chapters that elicit varying levels of critical thinking from students. Additionally, this book contains a section on "themes" in the novel, however, a theme is a sentence, not a one word topic. The themes presented here are misleading, though, a general discussion is presented on each topic. Honestly, as a teacher, this book was not helpful and I immediately wanted to send it back when I opened it. I already ordered a different teacher guide that includes chapter summaries, vocabulary word list suggestions, worksheets for extended practice, daily lesson plans and much more detailed handouts about historical context and the author.

I would NOT recommend this for a new teacher as this would be very confusing and misleading. A book like this should NOT be taught in five days with a class full of students. You need time to digest the big topics, discuss the material and take meaning away from Lee's incredible story. Anything less than that would be a disservice to Harper Lee and the students.

The lesson plans were very helpful and I would recommend it highly. No matter what age your child is, you can make the lessons work for you.

Only partially aligned to the Common Core. Would have like more samples of worksheets and activities. Writing prompts are somewhat useful.

This book provides insight and resources for teaching this classic piece of literature. It is an especially great tool for beginning teachers who mat have limited resources. Also provides veteran educators with ideas for teaching.
