This review is from: To Live Is To Die (MP3 Download)
This song titled "To Live Is To Die" is track number eight of the album and is the longest song clocking at nine minutes and forty eight seconds. It uses light and heavy dynamics with an acoustic intro that soon gives way to the song's main heavy riffs. On top of the riffage, Hammet plays an inventive lead guitar solo with a combination of bluesy and some rapid tapping. However, there's also an unexpected bridge towards the latter half with Hetfield providing a set of melodic arpeggios on the electric guitar that slowly builds up in harmony with a guitar overdub that sounds almost like a violin. This section is a highlight here and has an anthemic feel! Hetfield recites a few lyrics written by bassist Cliff Burton somewhere in the middle and to finish off, the band reprises the interesting acoustic piece heard at the beginning. One of the band's best! Hear it!
