5.0 out of 5 stars An innovative approach to storytelling April 6, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although each poem works beautifully on its own, it was the way the pieces were woven together that really brought the collection to life for me. I found I had to keep reading to discover what happened next, and then found I had to go back and reread my favorites, savoring each one. Whether they were letters from one character to another or beautifully crafted snapshots of WWII Philippines, these poems will stay with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tops my list for poetry books this year! March 28, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the spirit of full disclosure, I must admit that I had the chance to read this delightful book before publication. I expected to be a bit positively biased when it crossed my desk but in truth, I was not prepared for the full impact of Holly's poetry. Rarely do I read poetry books cover to cover in one sitting. I often sift through them, reading a few poems here and there, often not finishing many of the books I pick up because my attention has been caught by another poet in the meantime. Not so with "To One Who Lives on the Mainland." I was blown away by the people of Holly's poetry, by the detail, by the pictures painted within just a few lines of words. I gulped down each poem as though I might never have enough and then I read it again. Few poetry books make my read-over-and-over-again list, but this one will be a book that I predict will turn dog-eared over the years to come. I've already added it to my list of holiday gifts I'll be giving!

Truthfully, Holly is a master weaver of words both accessible and beautiful, wrought with emotion and incredible detail. This is a rich, artful debut collection that every lover of poetry should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great poetry AND insight into WWII March 26, 2010
Format:Paperback
I read some of Holly's poems that made it into this book both in draft form and in the final mss, and I think this is a great example of what is hopefully an emerging poetic form - a sort of narrative collection which leaves you feeling at the end of it that you've gotten to know something about the characters and the surrounding history.
