More About the Author

Award-winning author Patience Griffin has been sewing her whole life but didn't discover her love of quilting until her late thirties. She decided the best way to acquire her first quilt was to make one for herself. At nearly the same time, she started commuting three and half hours a day for her dream engineering job. To pass the time on the long drive, she got hooked on audiobooks--especially books with love stories. Within a couple of years, she was writing stories of her own. It was no surprise to her family and friends when she combined her love of quilting, her small town roots, and her obsession with Scottish romances into novels. She has gained some recognition with her September 11th Story Quilt which has toured the country as the property of the Pentagon. Her first book, To Scotland with Love, received a Publishers Weekly *starred reviewed, won the New England Readers' Choice award and Golden Quill for best first book and was also a double RITA® finalist. Patience's Kilts and Quilts series takes place in small town Scotland and set around a group of quilters. She loves to write about home, heart, and community.

I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
This book was so hard to put down! I read Friday night for 5.5 hours and 2 hours last night! I had dreams about the characters and finished the book with so much joy! I cried and laughed and wanted to reach into the book and shake a few people. It ended beautifully.

Nothing is more enchanting to me than to read about a place and want to visit or even live there. To Scotland with Love is set in a very charming coastal sea town in Scotland in which Patience Griffin sets up her new Kilt and Quilt series. This debut was more to me than just a romance between two deserving people. It was a story of life in a town that knows each other and they take care of each other. For two people Gandiegow is a new beginning but for very different reasons.

Cait MacLeod is returning to Gandiegow for a fresh start and to reconnect with her grandmother. She’s left behind a sad journalist career and hopes to salvage it. After the death of her philandering husband she isn’t interest in men, marriage or love for that matter. She’s a little lost and hopes that returning to her birth hometown she can find herself again. She’s self-absorbed when she first gets home and it is all about her and what she wants. When she finds that this is the place a movie star retreats to between films she is ready to write that comeback story to jumpstart her career. Cait doesn’t know how to act around her taciturn grandmother Deydie and it pretty much is hit and miss. But she keeps at it and joins her quilting ladies and finds some connecting. Cait is a good person at heart but her intentions are in the wrong place. She grows the most over the course of the story and it is gratifying when her heart is in the right place at the end.

Graham Buchanan is a movie star that calls Gandiegow home when he isn’t acting. His career has allowed him to be close to his son and grandson, without them being part of the limelight of a Hollywood star. He was away for most of his son Duncan’s younger years and lives with regrets and guilt that he hopes he can make up for it.

When her cheating husband has a heart attack on his mistress's bed, Caitriona Macleod realizes it's time to reset her life. For her, that means returning to her roots in the small Scottish town where her grandmother still lives and attempting to reconnect with her roots. One thing Cait is sure of--she's done with men. After seeing her father's near-abusive treatment of her dying mother and her husband's infidelity, Cait has no use for them. Cait isn't surprised that her grandmother is angry, bitter and unwelcoming. What does surprise her is that the small town of Gandiegow happens to be the secret home of the world's sexiest movie star, Graham Buchanan--the man she's secretly had a crush on since he appeared as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

Graham Buchanan never became the fisherman his father and his son were and are. Instead, his acting career provided him considerable wealth--wealth he showers on Gandiegow in exchange for their protecting his privacy and for their part in helping raise his son and now grandson while he's so frequently away. While he's made a fortune, he still suffers from guilt over essentially abandoning his son to be raised by the village--guilt that is exasperbated by his son, Duncan's, anger. Graham's relationship with Duncan's mother ended badly and he's never been interested in a long term relationship with a woman since. But there's something about Cait that whets his curiosity--and it's not just his instinctual recognition that she's a reporter and hence a danger to him and his entire way of life.

To Scotland With Love is the debut novel of author Patience Griffin. I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It was wonderful with fantastic characters who are so real and well crafted. I am totally in love with this small coastal town and want to move there straightaway. Graham Buchanan is hiding out from his movie star life. Cait Macleod has returned home to salvage what's left of her life. When she accidentally meets Graham, she sees an opportunity to reboot her journalism career by exposing his secret home town to the world. But will she be able to go through with it?

'Twas a verra good story and I canna wait to read more from this author! :)

Rather than recap the plot which other reviewers have already done, I'll just mention what I admire most. The hero: everything you could want in a hero. Gorgeous, wealthy, kind, and so on. What Griffin has done exceptionally well is make this paragon into someone you would want to live next door to and talk to over a pint at the pub. He's fleshed out into a real person.

Kate, the heroine, is equally "real." She is not perfect, but she tries. Her heart is in the right place, but she meets the hero at a really low point in her life and nearly ruins her chances for happiness with him because she is confused and searching for a new way to live in the world after her troubles overwhelmed her.

Gandiegow, the Scottish village, is almost another character. We meet quite a few villagers, and I expect we'll see them again in future books.

A really good read. I recommend it.
