Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Brown stays on familiar turf—rural Oklahoma—for this contemporary chaste romance, the first of the Broken Roads series. After Dee Hooper's marriage to an upper-crust Pennsylvanian is annulled, she returns to Buckhorn Corner and the embrace of her charmingly eccentric Southern family: feisty grandmother Roxie, unlucky-in-love mother Mimosa, jailed sister Tally and precocious 11-year-old niece Bodine. And awaiting her next door is Jack, Dee's childhood friend, an independently wealthy writer of computer games who likes the simple country life. Everyone but Dee's aware that Jack's always carried a torch for her, and though a couple of obligatory obstacles are placed between them and a rosy resolution, there isn't much in the way of tension. First of all I love stories set in small towns, where family means more to the people who live and work there, than anything else this world has to offer. And in this book...Dee finally comes to realize that very fact, after seven long lonely years in the "Dog Eat Dog" world of the rich & famous people, while living the big city life.

All the women in this book are strong willed characters, and Dee is no exception. Oh they might grieve once in a while, but not for too long. Then they pick themselves up, and they find a way to move on.

Growing up she always wanted to escape the small town life. So when a good looking man from Pennsylvania shows up and promises her the moon, she pulls up stakes and leaves the town and her family in the dust. Jack Brewer, Dee's next door neighbor for the last twenty some years & also her best friend since they were only a few years old..... begs her not to leave. But Dee ignored his pleas completely. Getting out of that small town was the only thing on her mind, and no one or nothing, was going to stop her at that point.

Jack has always secretly loved Dee for as long as he can remember. So when Dee ignores his pleas and leaves, he ends up with shattered heart. He vows to never marry after that. If anything, he becomes more and more devoted to Dee's family. He also goes over and sits with them on the back porch every night, to watch the sunset with them, hoping to hear any new news about Dee and how her life is going these days..

Jack had his own chance to live town, after his grandparents died and left him richer then sin. But jack stayed there and made it even bigger by inventing and programming games for the internet. That doesn't mean he lived high on the hog though.

Carolyn Brown outdid herself with the first book, of the "Broken Road" romances. After wasting seven years of her life on the wrong man, Dee Hooper is grateful to be back in her hometown of Buckhorn Corner, Oklahoma. Her grandmother, Roxie warned her not to marry that millionaire from Pennsylvania, unfortunately for Dee, she had to learn the hard way. Now, looking around, it was good to be home, to be with the people she loved, and who loved her. There was her sister Tally, who was currently in jail for writing bad checks, her niece Bodine, with a spitfire attitude, and her mother Mimosa, whose had more husbands than Dee could count. And of course, her neighbor and best friend that Dee has known since they were babies, Jack Brewer. That day, as they were sitting on the back porch, Jack came over, and Dee was so surprised how handsome he was and stunned of her reaction to him. After her ex, she vowed never to trust another man again, so as much as she found herself attracted to him, with great effort, she fought the urge. Jack Brewer was in love with Dee Hooper, since grade school, but when she announced seven years earlier, that she was getting married, they had a huge fight, and she left town. In school, Jack was always good at computers, but when Dee left, he went to college, studied computer programming, went into business with some college buddies, and was part of a well-known computer company. In other words, Jack didn't suffer for money, instead, he was very content with a family convenient store, in town, selling bait and other products, to the local fishermen and any campers that came in. At the news that Dee was back, Jack went right over to see her, and at first sight, he knew she was the only one who fill that hole in his empty heart.Read more ›

This book was wonderfully entertaining throughout; it told a delightful, layered love story with a seemingly authentic Southern backdrop. The author painted a picture in which the reader could immerse.

Good book. Not great. It was a little slow at times but overall a decent book. Good book but easy to put down.

This is a cute romance story about a woman named Dee who married a rich man and got away from the small town life she was used to. Low and behold the marriage fails and she moves back home and of course falls in love with her best friend Jack. The story line was predicable, nothing far fetched or never heard of. But it's a classic love story. We did get a cliffhanger ending, but I am sure i know where the story is going, even though I am going to read it. If you are a fan of the classic love stories then this will be right up your ally, it is also filled with gold old fashioned southern charm.
