I have no kitchen stove so I have been relying on this little champ for everything from tea to pasta (before South Beach Diet) to making eggs in the morning, etc. I have owned this unit for over 3 years and have NEVER ONCE had a problem with it. Awesome for a college student or a person with a tiny apartment such as mine. Also great for taking to work. It is a bit hard to...

3.0 out of 5 stars A couple of problems
Firstly, the top does not lift up very far for cleaning. Cleaning the inside is therefore a hassle.

Secondly, the temperature control knob is black as is the unit; you cannot easily see the position of the knob! I marked a few places on the unit with a Sharpie and colored the top of the knob so I could at least tell what was going on.

Awesome for a college student or a person with a tiny apartment such as mine. Also great for taking to work. It is a bit hard to clean and there is not too much area to touch to move it while it is still cooling down. Other than that, I highly recommend it. I am here today to buy the DOUBLE version and I can only hope that it performs as well as it's little sister. Enjoy!!! - Lin

1.0 out of 5 stars Breaks After 6 Months--AVOID this one like the plague!, April 30, 2007

I have just thown away the second Toastmaster 6420 burner to fail within a year--the first one lasted four months, this one lasted 8 months. I know, I know, I am idiot for buying a second one after a failed first. You would think I would learn my lesson.

After they failed, if you shook them to try to make them work (which was effective at times), you could see sparks inside the unit--very dangerous to say the least.

I have seen several posts across the internet that I am not the first to experience problems with these inexpensive Toastmaster burners dying after a very, very short time. Mine failing (as well as sparking) were NOT isolated incidents.

This is as bad and cheaply made as a product can get. Not to mention just plain dangerous!

AVOID THE TOASTMASTER BURNERS LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

1.0 out of 5 stars long lasting but becomes a fire hazzard., October 5, 2007

I had this for a few years and it worked great but I was always extremely careful with it, always cutting off its' power source after every use because I didn't trust it. And sure enough, it had fire-sparks from its' old and over-used state today. I switched to a NON-coil hotplate some year in between, figuring it was less of a fire hazzard, but it broke after a year, so I went back to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars But Wait! It's NOT a stove!, May 24, 2008
This review is from: Toastmaster 6420 Basic Burner Single-Burner Buffet Range (Kitchen)
This product has produced consistant heat for me for 3 years. I use it in my smoker about 3-4 times a year on high for 12-15 hours each time. Most of the reviews I read were dissatisfied after trying to make this unit perform as a stove, not an auxillary warming surface. I have found it to be extremely durable and well constructed, as we leave it in the smoker year round (snow, rain, etc. - in Nebraska). I would buy another if this one should die. If you want to replace or supplement your stove, buy something with a little more wattage.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst single burner I have ever used, May 10, 2010
This review is from: Toastmaster 6420 Basic Burner Single-Burner Buffet Range (Kitchen)
I bought this unit because of other reviews. However, when I first used it, I noticed that when I had it on low heat, the entire coil would get red hot for about 2 minutes and then cool down to the lower setting. When I had it on high, it would get red hot and then cut off after a few minutes.

I called Proctor Silex and they were very, very friendly. They said it was defective and would send a replacement. Well, the replacement does exactly the same thing as the original. I think the placement of the thermostat (up front and below the case) is the problem.

I gave both of them to the Good Will. Perhaps someone can use them. I have an older toastmast 6420 that I have used for over 10 years and guess I'll buy another one of those; even though the reviews on Amazon regarding that unit are horrendous. I have never had a problem with mine

Ya if you live in a small little space without the benefit of a complete kitchen this little guy will do every thing you need. It's durable and gets hot quick. Unlike those solid burner kind that take for ever to heat up and stay hot for a long time after. And since I live in the desert unnecessary heat is not a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Burner !, June 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toastmaster 6420 Basic Burner Single-Burner Buffet Range (Kitchen)
I don't understand why this burner didn't get a 5 star review. I have been "extremely happy" with it. The dial settings are accurate, and when working with the "high" setting, the heating element stays on instead of cycling on and off like another burner that I recently purchased. Most pans also cover the heating element completely, so that if there are any over spills from an accidental overboil, it does not make the burner have an electric short, like the other burner that I mentioned.
A++. Great value.

It's a good product. It heats up fast. It's easy to use. It takes up little space on the counter. Fine for a small frying pan.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted, May 12, 2008
This review is from: Toastmaster 6420 Basic Burner Single-Burner Buffet Range (Kitchen)
This burner died after less than a month of (admittedly heavy) use. It worked fine one morning and later that day when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened.

It was great when it was working, though.
