I actually have the Toastmaster THMP2, which as far as I can tell is pretty much identical to this pot but with a now obsolete model number.

First, what I like about this pot: its cheap and it gets hot fast. Even filled to the fill line and set to the lowest setting, it boils water in about 3 minutes. I'm actually not too sure what the benefit of the higher settings are. Water doeesn't boil much faster, but just boils more vigorously and produces lots of steam.

Now, the flaws:

1) The cord is mercilessly short. Probably about 2 feet long, maybe a bit less. If your wall outlets are too far from the floor, you may have to move furniture to make a place to set the pot.

2) The lid is hard to get on, and hard to get off, and needs to be perfectly aligned...or else. If its not quite straight, it will still snap into place, but leave a thin little gap right by the handle. If you pick it up before waiting for the temperature to drop a bit, it directs all the steam right at your thumb. I burned myself pretty goood the first time I used it. Also, once the lid is properly snapped into place, it takes some prying to get it off again. While I understand the importance of having the lid stay securely in place when pouring hot liquids, its a bit unreasonable. Worse, the "handle" on the top is singularly ill designed for gripping or prying off the lid, both in form and placement, and trying to pry from the edge of the lid is likely to get you a steam burn. It takes great care to remove the lid without splashing the boiling contents.

3) The "non-stick" coating on the heating element seems to be specially designed to accumulate calcium deposits. Even when I use filtered water, and never let it boil for very long, you get a pretty obvious layer of scaling after 5 or 10 uses. You can't really scrub it or you'll take the coating off along with the calcium. You can get it clean by soaking it in vinegar, but then the next couple pots of water will have a faint vinegary aroma, as the acidity seems to cause it to soak into the plastic a little.

4) Probably the most glaring flaw: you can't turn it off without unplugging it. The stupidity of that design choice doesn't really need any explanation.

So to summarize--you get what you pay for. If you just want a cheap electric pot to make tea when youre pulling an all nighter at the library, its well suited for that. If you think you'll be boiling water on a daily bassis, then I suggest looking for a more elegant solution.

This product is a law suit waiting to happen. I am constantly getting burned from the steam coming out the opening from the lid that does not fit on snuggly. Or the lid will fall off mid pour and hit the cup and water spills everywhere. For those of you thinking DUH hold the lid on with your finger - that finger gets burned from the steam coming from the pour hole. All in all its a really bad design - good idea - bad design.
Save yourself some bucks and burns and stay away from this product!!

This is a no-frills, economically priced hot pot from Toastmaster. It does only one thing: boils water, but it does it fast, much faster then my stove top kettle. This is a great little hot pot for a kitchen and would be a great addition to a dorm room or office since it is small and compact.One of the flaws of this unit is the short cord, ok for the kitchen, but maybe not for other spaces. I totally recommend this unit for anyone looking to boil water.
