From Publishers Weekly

After playing hide-and-seek in Toby, Where Are You?, the hero now uses his body and props to disguise himself in Toby, What Are You? by William Steig, illus. by Teryl Euvremer. Children can guess along with Toby's mother and father as the fellow turns into a pair of scissors, a banana sandwich and a wobbly coffee table. Cozy family scenes may well inspire youngsters to join the fun.

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-In this winning sequel to Toby, Where Are You? (HarperCollins, 1997), Steig and Euvremer team up again for a fun family guessing game. It all starts when Toby's father arrives home to find his son on the front step, pretending to be a doormat. Toby goes on to imitate a clothes tree, a banana sandwich, a mountain with snow on it, and more with his parents madly guessing what he is each time. The fact that they don't always get it right gives Toby the added pride of stumping them. Finally, the tables are turned as Dad picks him up and says, "You're a cowboy on his way to bed, and I'm your horse." While it is never clear what kind of animals Toby and his family are, they are delightful in their comfy home. The adults are dressed to the nines as they sip tea in overstuffed chairs by the fireside. Euvremer's charming pictures are rendered in soft tones that make this a perfect choice for a little mayhem just before bedtime.-Bina Williams, Bridgeport Public Library, CT

5.0 out of 5 stars Toby's Back with More Fun and Games....., August 2, 2001
This review is from: Toby, What Are You? (Hardcover)
When father arrives home after work, he finds Toby lying in front of their front door. "What am I", asks Toby? "Aha, a new doormat", answers his father. Now let the games begin. As the evening wears on from dinner, relaxing family time, to bedtime, Toby delights his family with his inventive guessing game, pretending to be among other things, a clothes tree, bridge, sandwich, flyswatter and even a mountain with snow on top..... Those who enjoyed William Steig's Toby, Where Are You, will be just as enchanted with this new addition to the series. His simple guessing game text is beautifully complemented by Teryl Euvremer's soft, quiet, homey artwork and youngsters can put their imaginations to work as they guess right along with Toby's mother and father and even join in this interactive game. Perfect for pre-schoolers, Toby, What are You is a charming and creative picture book you won't want to miss.

This review is from: Toby, What Are You? (Hardcover)
My granddaughter lost this book from the library so I had to buy a copy to replace the one lost. Then we found the lost copy and so we got to keep the book. Eventually I had to let my granddaughter take it home with her because she loved it so much, mainly because of the fantastic illustrations that make you want to live in Toby's house yourself. The story is good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars If we've read this once, we've read this a thousand times!, August 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Toby, What Are You? (Hardcover)
My two year old loves this book and demands to read it 4 or 5 times a day. It is a story about a little dog who plays hide-n-seek from his parents who are eagerly searching for him all over the house. My daughter loves to "find" Toby as parts of him are peeking out on each page, much to his parent's apparently fruitless search. This is a really fun book which let's kids feel like they are in on something big in "finding" Toby when apparently his mommy and daddy can't! Great illustrations. A must have--HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended.
