5.0 out of 5 stars CRASH! Great Game from Toca Boca December 22, 2013
Verified Purchase
A game really has to be outstanding for me to give 5 stars and this one knocks my socks off.

It is truly frustration free for children aged 3 and up. I'm playing with a 2 year old and there is mild frustration that comes from having motor skills that aren't developed quite enough for games, but a 3 year old will have no problems.

What is great about this game is that there is absolutely no frustration. It's non-violent. It gives choices and allows the game to continue when the child goes off road of off the normal course. What is so great about this is that it gives the child an opportunity to problem solve without having to hand you the game (and interrupt you doing dishes or laundry) to get them unstuck. It's really a brilliant concept for young gaming.

No intrusive permissions, no in app purchasing, no ads. Nothing here gives me any pause about putting the games in the hands of a child. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toca games are great October 27, 2013

Even though the toca games are made for younger audiences, I find myself enthralled by the simple and entertaining game mechanics. As a 15 year old guy, I don't quite know if that's a good thing. But I digress.
The game is simple enough. In the menu you choose if your driver is male or female then you choose one of the two maps. One map is preloaded with buildings and ramps ( my favorite is the airplane one which turns your car onto a glider ) and the other is a blank canvas for you to build whatever you want.
I am slightly dissapointed in the fact that the cars are not customisable , and you have very limited resources when creating a map. But these minor flaws are easily forgotten when you keep mind that its made for littler kids and not people like me.

My 6 year old god-brother loves it so there's that as well

4.0 out of 5 stars Whimsical with a learning curve October 27, 2013

As a grandmother new to the world of children's apps, the technique of playing Toca Cars baffles me. My two young grandsons, however, have great fun with it. They have not yet developed skill driving Toca Cars but they love it anyway. They crash, drive through lakes, skid into fields, knock down stop signs and generally drive uncontrollably. Whee!

Neat fun for kids to play driving wildly. No rules or real objectives, just drive as crazy as you like. Drive around obstacles or just crash into them. You can Jump Ramps (wings appear while car is airbourne), Drive through Water, Chase the Dog, etc. Car is controlled by sliding your finger on screen in the direction you want car to go. Controls work well and car movements are smooth. However, it takes much practice to get the car movements to work accurately enough to avoid over-controlling or crashing unintentionally. Gets a little sloppy at times. Still fun to drive the car around the predesigned track or you can design you own track with any or all available buildings and other items. Music and Sounds are good also.

Overall, a good concept. Could use some improvements for better driving accuracy. Also would benefit by having some goals and then give positive feedback when accomplished. Kid's attention spans are short so some improvements could keep them from getting Bored too soon. I like this app but Grandkids get bored quickly. Still a decent app especially if you give it some time to master the movements. Many kids will just Enjoy the Crashing and Wild Driving and that's OK. Others will enjoy the Creative opportunities by building their own track with selected items.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK game/app December 23, 2013

this little game is OK. The first thing you notice when you start this app is that it's a very pretty game. It kind of has actually Little Big Planet kind of feel which is always fun.
I understand that this game is meant for kids but what at I didn't like were the controls. You control the car by moving your finger across the screen and the car follows your finger. There are times when your finger gets in the way and you can't see. It would have been better if the controls were in the corners so you can see what you are doing on the screen. There also isn't much here. It's a small town that you can create or drive in a pre made town. Making your own town with obstacles is cool and all but gets kind of old a little too fast. It would be cool.if they could make this a racing game, or at least make a racing game similar to this one.
Like I said, this game is OK right now, but could have the potential to be transformed into a fun little racing game.

This is a great game for little ones (my 3-year-old nephew played it) but the controls are not that intuitive. His first instinct was to tilt the device to steer, but was required to touch the screen in order to go forward or in reverse. This should be a setting that can be changed. Other driving games will go forward with tilt controls, and touching the screen is brake, then reverse. Having this option, plus more driver options would definitely bump up my review 2 more stars. It is a fun and fluid driving experience with fun building options as is.

2.0 out of 5 stars So-so December 22, 2013
By James

Things I liked:

* Graphics
* Sound
* A make-your-own-world option
* No in-game advertising
* No shop button for the child to get into trouble with

Things I didn't like:

* Open-ended, and yet very limited
** Only two drivers to choose from
** Only one landscape, period
** Cannot customize the vehicle
** No options for objectives, if the parent and child are so inclined
* No option to choose between touch-screen and tilting for controls
* The instructions were filed under "For Parents", which was in small font in a corner

The app has potential, I will give it that. However, as it currently stands, it's not worth $3. I'm glad I got to find this out via Free App of the Day instead of the hard way.
