5.0 out of 5 stars Toda, toda, todita Mafalda!, May 11, 2002
By
karibbeangirl "karibbeangirl" (Saint Paul, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable para todo Monero, January 7, 2001
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for any collection, April 29, 2004
By
Rich (Columbus, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
I think this book is essential to the home of every single spanish speaking american. Quino was way ahead of his time. Imagine Peanuts with a Doonesbury wrinkle throw in some Far Side and you start to get an idea of what Mafalda was all about. The kick was that it was written in the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately, many of the issues of that day are still far too relevant. For instance, there are many middle east strips that are as relevant today as they were then. This book features every single Mafalda strip and is a bargain at the asking price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfecto para quienes detestan la sopa, September 28, 2006
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)

5.0 out of 5 stars "Mafalda" is a treat that English speaking readers deserve to have..., September 24, 2005
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
This book is a compilation of all "Mafalda"'s comic strips. Who is "Mafalda", you might ask?. Well, she is a very outspoken little girl who isn't afraid to say exactly what she thinks about many subjects, including her parents, politics, ecology and her enormous distaste of soup :)

"Mafalda" was created by Argentine cartoonist Quino (the pseudonym of Joaquin Salvador Lavador), and has been published in Latin America, France, Greece, Italy, China and Portugal. Even though "Mafalda" first appeared in the '60s, most of the stories you will read in this book maintain their edge. A great part of "Mafalda"'s charm is that these comic strips allow us to see many matters from the point of view of a young but highly intelligent girl, who isn't old enough to know that speaking her mind isn't always the right thing to do.

All the same, her candid but highly accurate views on many issues will make you laugh, and think. Young children, teens and adults will interpret her words differently, based on their diverse experiences. But I bet all of them will enjoy this book.

You must take into account, though, that this book is in Spanish. That being the case, you should at least know some Spanish, or be eager to learn it (and there is no better reason to do that than wanting to read "Mafalda"!). What is more, and in case you are not ready to buy a complete edition of "Mafalda"'s comic strips, you can always find a smaller and less expensive edition in Amazon.

All in all, I think that "Mafalda" is a treat that the English speaking readers deserve to have. The language barrier is there, but it can be broken with some effort. Truth to be told, it is worth it. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate Mafalda, August 3, 2002
By
Javier Moreno (San Francisco Bay Area, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
Mafalda is, in Latin American comics, the equivalent of Peanuts and Doonesbury in U.S. American comics; and Seinfeld and That 70's Show in U.S. American TV. Mafalda presented a reality mixed with childhood fantasies of a long gone time for Argentina and South America in general. Even tho the current events of the 2000's are pretty much the same of the mid sixties. Mafalda was aware of the turmoil in Vietnam, Congo, the Watergate scandal, the Beatles, the psychedelia, the civil rights movement and of course the Argentinian politics; even tho Quino didn't have too much freedom to criticize the current government.

Quino was the quintessential socialist in a world that was turning towards socialism and had the opportunity to criticize U.S. politics and even an elbow to Cuba and Russia with a little help of not-so-innocent kids who were ready to make us laugh with their adventures and dialogue.

The humor is very tongue in cheek and charged with electricity regarding parent-children relations, marriage-career dilemmas, sexual impotency, mid-30's crisis, and hey, I detected teenage anxiety in Felipe's behavior towards girls and homework.

Manolito was my favorite character. Dumb as he can be, he's a disaster in everything at school except for math, due to his work at his dad's grocery store (Mind note: open an Almacén Don Manolo chain coffee house-deli with Mafalda strips on the wall anywhere in Argentina or Chile and you will be a millionaire.)

Mafalda now would be in her mid forties, and she would be a social worker, divorced (of course she never managed to have a healthy relationship with men and never respected her father) and living in a rented flat in downtown Buenos Aires, if she never decided to stay in Castro's Cuba because of the music, the mojitos and those handsome cuban boys who love her because of her accent.

Mafalda and Quino inspired everybody in the comic strip world of South America and Spain. Even me: www.geocities.com/cacaorock :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Quino, seguramente no mato a Mafalda!, June 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)

Gracias.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imperdible, April 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Toda Mafalda (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
