Editorial Reviews

Review

“Suzanne Gardinier takes a centuries-old poetic form—the ghazal—and injects its trademark themes of love and longing with words, references, metaphors and images that recall a more modern age: Manhattan, a country house, her lover’s bedroom, the daily news. The resulting poems elicit a distinctly modern sexiness and political resonance from the inherently lyrical, lilting and musical form. With endnotes that reference Joni Mitchell, Moby Dick, James Baldwin, the Bible and numerous news articles, these are the poems of a writer and a reader who prizes revelations of all kinds. They demand to be read aloud, given as gifts and photocopied for friends. They are poems that remind us that poetry is for everyone.”—Susan Stamberg, NPR Morning Edition

Review

“Gardinier is above all a poet whose language and images are completely integrated so that, in Keats’s words, every rift is laden with ore.” (Adrienne Rich)

TODAY -101 Ghazals. Reading this beautiful poetry is an eye opening experience, both tantalizing and educating. Some are hard to absorb at first but that is their strength. They bring one back to re-read and contemplate.

Many of these ghazals are a delight to read. Gardenier has made the right choice in dropping some of the prosodic requirements of a ghazal; they don't easily carry over into English. But she has retained the rhyme (qaafia) in a quite novel way -- as a phrase appended at the end. A few of these ghazals succeed brilliantly in conveying a lover's changing, sometimes joyful, sometimes angst-ridden relations with the beloved. At her best, these ghazals are among the best written originally in English.
