This review is from: Today Is the Highway (Audio CD)
Looking back 40 years at the release of Eric Andersen's first CD, the sound is rooted in that era of folk music, owning much to Bob Dylan's sound. But this release when Andersen was only 22 is a delightful one. "Time for My Returning" is a soft melody with Andersen's romantic lyric, "Her eyes lead me off the lonesome trail, her hands cool my body hot & weary, she can harbor me before tomorrow's journey when I face again the storms of another sea." At the time, Andersen cited "Looking Glass" as his best song with his expressive tenor, "She said for me her soul she'd sell even if she must walk the fires of hell." "Baby Please Don't Go" that was belted by Van Morrison & also the Astronauts is given a great folk reading. It's the only traditional piece on the set, all others penned by Andersen. "Song to J.C.B." is dedicated to a street blues singer J.C. Burriss who was a good friend of Andersen's and who spent a difficult time in jail. The set concludes with the delightful "Bumblebee." "Today Is the Highway" is a great folk first album from this wonderful singer. Enjoy!
