Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3–A variation of a Louisiana song with a twist–each day a new food is served as a faceless assortment of children come one by one to the table. Eventually, there are seven, with seven different dishes in front of them, a cat and dog underneath the table waiting for scraps, and a grandmotherly figure overseeing everything. Back matter includes a description of each dish and a recipe for Monday's red beans and rice. The simplicity of Kadair's bold, bright collages fits the text perfectly. The oblong format of this offering, with the words on the left-hand page and the illustration opposite, works well as the table gets pretty crowded at the end. A pleasing addition to Louisiana lore and a fun, light note for a unit on the state.–Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

This is a fun book to read or sing a long to. Sometimes, we play Johnette's CD, From the Gumbo Pot, and turn the pages to the song instead of reading words. My son loves this book and so do the kids in my Pre-K class! It exposes/teaches the children to so many things: great story, collage art as an illustrative tool, Louisiana culture, days of the week, rhythm.... My picky 2 1/2 year old has also become interested in trying some of these foods! So, I love it!

Just got this book today after seeing Johnette Downing at our library. Her books are great! Illustrations are really neat. The books give you that taste of Louisiana! Great gift for kids!! I also have "Down in Louisiana'!

She is great and her music is too! Wish she would make a DVD, she is AWESOME with the kids!!!

I bought this book for my son to share with his preschool class in Texas as part of a Mardi Gras celebration. I love that it highlights some of our favorite Louisiana foods, but it's missing something. The first few pages are basically "Today is Monday in Louisiana. Monday red beans." The remaining pages continue with that same formula. The illustrations mirror what you see on the cover. There's no element of surprise, no humor, no rhyme, nothing that made it a frequent repeat read for our family.

What a WONDERFUL little book! My older grandchildren read it in Kindergarden, and I ordered it in August to give to my youngest granddaughter for Christmas. I've hidden it so well, that now I can't find it. I'm afraid I'm going to have to re-order the darn thing, but it's OK.....ABSOLUTELY worth every single penny!!!!
