5.0 out of 5 stars My bf (EDIT: now husband) and I love these!
OK, not sure what the other commenter means about the oral sex taste, but it does not exist. My bf (now husband) cannot even tell I am using anything with this product. No feeling, no taste, nothing. Sure, it doesn't protect against STDs, but neither does the pill. This works much better because there are no side effects, no hormones and no waiting time. You just insert...

I used the sponge back when it first hit the market and loved it. Needless to say, I was ECSTATIC when it came back on the market and i'm a quite ticked that it's scarce again (and, yes, i've been running around like elaine in seinfeld, hoarding whatever i can find at the regular price on the shelves ... which are now, SADLY, empty). You just insert it and you are ready to go. It's even better than a diaphragm because no prescription is needed and the spermicide is in the sponge. All you do is open the package, wet the sponge, squeeze it to distribute the spermicide within it, and insert, which is very easy. That's it! Removal is no problem, too.

Yes, we love these things!

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars would be no need for contraception, August 18, 2006

The only disadvantage I can think of for this one is the fact that sometimes there is a little foamy leakage. I planned ahead one day and grabbed one early, so that when the kids went to sleep we would be ready. In the course of the afternoon, I was busy doing standard domestic stuff--dishes, cooking, chasing a 3 year old and two other children, not to mention walking the dog-- there was a certain amount of leakage from the spermacide. Perhaps I accidentally used too much water or something, but it was a one time issue.

Hubby said order more, he loves them, said he doesn't even know they are there. I couldn't say on the oral, we haven't done that with these, and we don't risk relying on them on the actual day of ovulation, but overall, I have to say, wonderful product, no risk, no problems, comfortable, easy to insert and remove. Also no need to watch the clock to see when that narrow window is like you have with films, foams, and jellies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been using it for years, August 13, 2006
This review is from: Today Sponge, Female Contraceptive (12 Sponges) (Health and Beauty)
First, it is not just men who don't like condoms. I'm a woman and I hate condoms. The guys I've dated have been more than willing to use condoms. If a guy was unwilling to wear a condom, I'm not sure I would trust him, and I would probably not have sex with him. However, I do not like condoms and therefore I've chosen to use other forms of birth control. After trying the pill, the novaring, and a diagphram, I discovered the sponge. I highly recommend it. My boyfriend cannot feel it, and there is no numbness or strange taste. It is not an "alternative" for me, it is my first choice.

This is truly a wonderous product! Ya just stick it in and go! Be sure to keep the suds away from your mouth, though (may result in slight numbness of tongue.) And please, keep in mind it is only 89-91% effective WHEN USED PROPERLY! Overall it is a great alternative to the other forms of contraceptives we have tried and tired of. The twelve pack is a big plus as well. Women with short fingers sometimes have a hard time removing it, but like the song says we'll get by with a little help from our friends! In my opinion there's only one question you should ask yourself before using this product... Are you sponge worthy?

I am extremely gratified to see this product return to the marketplace. During the two years that I used this product, not only did it provide very good contraception (next best thing to the birth control pill for me personally), but the only product I know of that allowed me to go swimming during my menstrual period with confidence, since there was no leakage at all.

I used the sponge back when it first hit the market and loved it. Here's my rant ... I find it VERY odd that the company who made the deal to take over from allendale pharmaceuticals retooled the packaging to appeal to a younger market but has recently filed for reorganization under Chapter 11. And NOW, when we're sent to links to buy the sponges online in the US, we're asked to pay varying exhorbitant prices including $130 for a box of 12 that used to cost $35!!!!????? (Price of three online - $43/ on the shelf - $10; Price of 6 online - $75/ on the shelf $16) Like the rising cost of gas, THIS ALSO "SMELLS" .... AND ... can you say ..... SCALPING? Something just doesn't seem kosher.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Terrible Experience, August 31, 2007

I got this product on recommendation of my gynecologist, as a back-up method. She also showed me how to use it. I used the sponge properly and not only did it get stuck, but after following all the directions in the information sheet about how to remove it, it ripped apart as I was trying to get it out. My boyfriend had no luck either, and the entire ordeal was awful for both of us. I ended up going to an emergency clinic (because we were out of the country) to have it removed. When it came out it was torn in several places. The gynocologist who removed it for me (with some difficulty) said she's seen them get stuck before but never tear. I then developed an infection because not all of the pieces came out. One came out over a 2 weeks later when I got my period.

I had wished this would be a great back-up method or primary method some day but I'll never try it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has been very effective for me, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Today Sponge, Female Contraceptive (12 Sponges) (Health and Beauty)
The Today Sponge is so easy to use. I love that it performs three duties: kills sperm, absorbs sperm and semen, and covers the cervix. They are unnoticeable once inserted, and maybe it depends on your body, but they do stay in place. I have had no side effects with these at all (or pregnancy) so far and have been using them for about 3 months.

I cannot believe the price of these on here. I bought a box of 6 a few days ago at Walgreens and they were actually on sale for 12.49, down from 19.99.

A plus...no hormones! If you've already used things like a menstrual cup like "Instead" then this should be easy to insert. Don't be afraid to push it up high. You won't lose it! I like the fact that you can put it in ahead of time and then not worry about when you need to put it in. You don't need to go to the doctor or get any prescriptions to get this, so that's also a plus. I say partner this up with a condom and your ready to go!
